i came across that gem last night, while beeing trapped by an advertisment from Discogs - "the ten most underrated Albums by Legends", somethin like that. And, what can i say? i immediately fell in love with that strange and wonderful music and wanted to buy an LP - only Vinyl in my shelf. Okay, after checking i orderd a Re-Re-Issue. Wow, prices are bollocks for Originals...

since the "brilliant adventure" box is out, I hope there'll be a separate release of "outside" soon. or even better NOW, not tomorrow

I'm referring to the digipack edition. Horrible paper. Bad decision. When opening the seal it already looks dirty, used, damp, with damaged and skinned edges. Disgusting. I hope it was relaunched in jewel case edition.

Any particular reason why the Parlophone issues use orange text for the title logo on digital releases, but keep the original red for physical releases (speaking as someone with a US Parlophone CD)? It seems like such an arbitrary change to make for one particular type of release.

This is a strong and bewildering album. When listening to the artful crazyness, you may want to take a look at the pictures Bowie made, too!

At the time and to this day this has often been referenced as Bowie's "industrial" album. From a guy who bathed in pure industrialism of the late 70s and early-to-mid 80s, I can quite enthusiatically claim that there is barely any industrial-ish element at all on this record. Perhaps the closest one can come to labeling this under the industrial genre is simply the fact David was hanging around Trent Reznor and the NIN (Nine Inch Nails) crew prior and during the time of this release. (personal opinion: I myself don't believe NIN or Marilyn Manson ever to have been "industrial" save for their whinning and stylistic thievery of true pionners who came long before they did. But I digress).
"1. Outside" is the closest to a schidzophrenic's concept album from the ever experimentally-enclined Bowie since his post 80s stadium pop favorites. Many folks have mentionned how they have difficulty figuring out what happened to Bowie on this record, but perhaps he was simply trying to explore new things as he often did - incorporating elements from various sources to source his own self, fuel his aural visions into cohesive audio recordings. Prior to the Pet Shop Boys' club version, Bowie's "Spaceboy" original was rumoured to have been somewhat inspired by Swiss band The Young Gods' 1992 english album "T.V. Sky", in production at the very least.
I always found it intriguing how for the most part Mr Bowie was able to "get away with" some of the things he was doing. His stature was perhaps what enabled the big record company executives to give him (almost) free reign to release (almost) whatever he wanted, a fact which, in commercial pop music, is not often seen save for the U2 "Zooropa" / "Pop" era (it was rumoured that not since The Beatles a band was able to get "final cut" (to coin a motion picture expresssion) on their recordings for a major record label).
Although a very hard listen for either those longing for the "classic" or at least the pop Bowie as well as the more contemporaries, "1. Outside" still remains at the very least a very enigmatic and intriguing album which deserves to be enjoyed under specific circumstances. My own humble opinion is quite simply exquisitely well produced organized chaos - trying to mesh a seemingly un-mixable amount of ideas and concepts into one single record. -
