Like the Outside album, for some reason Heathen has quite a few album variations, which can have considerably different track listings and even different versions of the tracks + higher quality and collectability. Here is a bit of an overview of some variations on the Heathen album, many at good prices. There are a few of the double CDs at cheaper prices and I think they are the same quality as the expensive Japanese one, having exactly the same tracks (12 + 4). This one has it in a good digipack (https://discogs.cinepelis.org/sell/release/160316?ev=rb), I have this one.
Then there are other special editions . . .
The SACD, which is expensive, is deservedly special for its price - (https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/2832908-David-Bowie-Heathen). "Note that the surround mix is also a remix; a lot of tracks are radically different, often with different instrumentation, different takes, even different arrangements, longer intro's and/or outro's and extra or longer instrumental ages." + 4 extra tracks.
And of course the version in the box set which to me is a 'must have' because it has 5 x albums, each with a bonus disc suring the extras of most other https://discogs.cinepelis.org/master/272598-David-Bowie-Outside-Earthling-Hours-Heathen-Reality . The price may seem high, but when you divide it by ten, the number of discs you get, it is well worth it. The bonus disc of Heathen includes:
David Bowie Sunday (Moby Remix) 5:11
–David Bowie A Better Future (Remix By Air) 4:58
–David Bowie Conversation Piece 3:53
–David Bowie Panic In Detroit 3:01
–David Bowie Wood Jackson 4:48
–David Bowie When The Boys Come Marching Home 4:46
–David Bowie Baby Loves That Way 4:46
–David Bowie You've Got A Habit Of Leaving 4:53
–David Bowie Safe 4:44
–David Bowie Shadow Man 4:46
My favourites in the box set are Outside, including many hard to get remixes of Halo Spaceboy / and Heathen. It's also good to have this period of Bowie's work neatly slipcased. -
I wonder if somebody can help here . . .
I was on the David Bowie official webiste / store about two days ago. On it I saw Heathen, a double vinyl edition, there was a picture and it showed the two vinyl discs coming out a double gatefold cover of Heathen. The photo made the vinyl look like it was red vinyl, but the verbal description stated "double clear vinyl edition".
I love this album so wanted to order it right away, but then there was a problem with the page, the purchase didn't go through, and then all evidence of this Heathen double album vanished. I tried to find evidence of it on the site (and elsewhere). Nothing. I know I saw it (and can still see it in my head). I must have caught the page just as they were taking it down.
I wonder what potential projects there are with the Heathen album? It's a great album, and would be perfect for a double album as it could have the unreleased 'Toy' tracks and any of the other available remixes (Moby etc) . . . it would then stand srongyly with its monster companion: Outside, double vinyl album. -
The SACD version has the same compressed mastering as the CD version and as such is simply a waste of the SACD format. If you want a version with half decent dynamic range, get the original vinyl pressing from 2002 - MOVLP470 still leaves something to be desired.

The artistic heyday of David Bowie in the 1970s when he was groundbreaking albums as Hunky Dory, Alladin Sane, Low and Heroes made. Both on the musical as on the Visual plane at that time frequently changed the elusive artist of style. With the discogetinte Let's Dance (1983) he finally broke through to a large audience, after which his work was increasingly volatile. Bowie on Heathen works for the first time in a long back together with Tony Visconti, one of the producers from its heyday. The sticker on the cd promises us ' classic David Bowie circa 2002 ' and that's the nail on its head. No forced, trendy dance rhythms this time but beautiful songs with a ' old fashioned ' sound, able to this time translated. Most fans had given up hope that Bowie would make such a strong plate again.

Edited 10 years agoI was very happy with this album. I am a Bowie fanatic and although I cannot listen to a lot of his 90's work, after 2000 he returns to a style that I can understand. The covers on this album were supposedly done for his Pinups cover album back in 1972, and finally recorded now.
Really do enjoy listening to this album. It could even be said that a lot of the working themes come through again in "The Next Day" single. Just that one song on his last album reminds me of this entire album, so if you liked it you won't be disappointed with his work here!
