This is my favourite U2 album. I bought it in Australia when it dropped in 1997 and I've always loved it. I just can't listen to anything else by them because of Pop!
-
It is at least arguable that Bono and co attempted to take rock music into new, exploratory places on all three of their 1990s LPs: after 1991’s Achtung Baby and 1993’s Zooropa came Pop in 97’, striking the poses of a concept album and the stuff of immediate acclaim, as they marshalled aural images into a bold synthesis of musical splendour.

Edited 16 hours agoPink Floyd released the aptly-titled compilation “A Collection of Great Dance Songs,” and U2 came out with the record “Pop.” Honestly, this album just grows on me more and more over the years. Experimental U2 (The Unforgettable Fire, Zooropa, engers’ Original Soundtracks 1, Pop, No Line on the Horizon) offers its own carved out value to their legacy. I had that moment realizing I discovered something interesting just by seeing the album cover itself floating in my Dad’s CD collection. Because it certainly is an interesting bookend to U2’s ambitious 90s run before returning to more familiar territory the following decade.
Favorite track currently: didn’t start out this way but the song itself and the music video for “If God Will Send His Angels” really do it for me with its minimalist approach. I’ve seen the band themselves lament its unfinished feel but to me, it’s such a strength. -
Everybody is always praising the Achtung Baby! especially those who don't really know U2 and it is very good indeed. But this one is the one they released at their creative zenith. Their Re-Mixers were as well and they still released very good b-sides. We got the engers album the Bat-Man-Song and A Million Dollar Hotel with two classics on it. Sadly it all went downhill from there and today they are at the lowest low so far and even a jukebox in Las Vegas. Sad to see.

Edited 2 years agoHmm... Yes. Yes! Yeah!!! This has gotta be my favourite U2 album. Ever. I love J-Tree and Rattle And Hum. I love them dearly. Attention Baby is a revolution. But Pop has so much to offer even after dozens of spins. The most adventurous, daring, outrageous, delicious U2 album with a squeeze of lemon to top it off. They had to be in the wrong state of mind at the right time to create something so brave. It's going to be impossible to recreate this level of craziness again, and they know it. What makes Pop flawless is its flaws. This was not meant to be a sort of homecoming.
P.S.: Note the best ever B-sides. Pop Muzik, Holy Joe, North And South Of The River, Your Blue Room and Happiness Is A Warm Gun and not a bad remix. MOFO! -
My copy was bought in Singapore and has different Matrix, Cat. No. & barcode as detailed below:
524 366-2 01 > 4UALKXXXX MADE IN BY PMDC B, Mastering SID Code: IFPI L003, Mould SID Code: IFPI 01E6.
Barcode:7 31452 43662 7.
Is this perhaps a counterfeit? The Cat. No. 524 366-2 is also on the disc and the insert as well as spine. Can't find any details anywhere and reluctant to put it as a new variant if it is a fake. Any ideas? -

Seems a bit draconian... any explanations ? -

Edited 19 years agoIt's a shame how people underrate and missunderstand this album (probably without even having listened to it). It has nothing to do with pop or techno music. It's full of irony, starting right from the title. Citing someone from amazon.com, "It is broken and cold and sick. It is also hot and crazy and distrastously tinged with something that only seems like hope. The songs on this album stretch from the sublime to the grotesque and back again through the slimey or the desperate". It's innovative yet very listenable rock music way ahead of its time. I think it's the last great U2 album, and in the top 2 with Achtung Baby. Every true U2 fan should appreciate it.
