This Limited Clear Vinyl issue is a nice pressing with an excellent sound in the original sleeve. -
Why does there have to be a whole new entry for a repress. It's the same goddamn thing. Same masters, same production. Nothing changed. They just made more copies of the same thing. This is silly and adds unnecessary noise to the database.
-
4 years to wait for a repress of this fabulous album. I'm glad to have wait and not spent 90€ from scalpers.
It's now, for the moment, available in every good records shop. Run !
This is one of my top3 favorite from Tone Poet series. All is extremely well balanced, the cymbals are vibrants, the bass is deep and all play is a gorgeous relief scene.
Byrd on the left and Mobley on the right creating a beautifull balance when they playing together.
With the thick gatefold sleeve and the new RTI anti-static inner, the presentation is top notch.
I can't recommend more this one.

What was said before about AP, MM, Tone Poet, is true and even more, all three are excellent pressings, however it is more musical to be able to listen to a 33 1/3, two-sided, instead of a 45, four-sided, to increase the value, and increase the profits of the Record company.

I’ve been waiting for this record to be reissued for more than 3 years, glad I found it at The in Groove at the regular price.
Amazing Herbie album, wide soundstage, agree the cymbals are a tide splashy.
This mastering is really good, nice dynamics and separation. -
Just don't pay these ridiculously high prices here or on eBay. This Tone Poet record will be re-pressed in July 2025, according to information from my record dealer.

Oh wow....
Possibly my favourite Herbie BN album of the lot... immense record from start to finish with just enough eclectic vibes to make it a record to appreciate more and more and also refrain from the artists to not veer into pointless noodling.
For some reason i was slow to open my copy having owned for a few years. My comparison for this cut is with a BN Cd from a Herbie boxset making for quick A/B comparisons with level matching.
In short.... the Tone Poet smokes the CD ive got. Its a complete walk over.... dimensionality, body and texture, realism of instruments. KPG doesnt often get it wrong but here he gets it perfect imo.
Its hard to imagine this recording will ever get better treatment than this Tone Poet edition Its like getting an MMJ 33 for a fraction of the price!
Superb. -
Edited 3 months agoForemost, while most of the Scorpio reissues have improper centering, this pressing was within tolerance!
The mastering by David Cheppa (presumably from digital) is also acceptable. One of his better attempts. For the most part, it adheres to the Van Gelder approach. Based on my experience with multiple VG stampers, this lacks both the airy finesse and bottom end clarity, yet not to distraction. It's a competent execution. Not for snobs, but serviceable. I much prefer these sonically over Kevin Gray's abhorrent coagulation of frequencies which rob the instruments of their jagged clarity. Factor in that Gray is frequently using the tapes which in many instances have deteriorated into a warbly and unstable mess, and the Scorpio wins the modern bracket..
In conclusion, stick with this or the Van Gelder. However be warned, blue label United Artists are prone to frequent miscentering. I have one to prove it. -
My pressing is just about perfect. The sound jumps out of the speakers as there was no surface noise. You can only hear surface noise, and not much of that at all, during the quiet ages. This album is volumed at a somewhat low level, so you'll have to turn it up from your usual setting.
Brass instruments appear out of the left and right speakers. The drums are on the right, the bass in the back right, and the piano is in the middle. Each of the instruments was easy to pick out in space. The drums were quite detailed, with the cymbals being just a tad splashy. The piano is that typical Rudy van Gelder soft piano.
Overall, the album is excellent in of sound quality.

Although I missed this pressing when it was first released, I am very glad I picked it up secondhand. Side A really swings; I agree with the other reviews about how this album grows on you. Outstanding, so much to hear every time I put it on.
