Edited 2 years agoJudging by the re-sale prices, I see that the scalpers have claimed this already. Why should the Paul Bowles estate or indeed, labels like Folkways or Dust to Digital own this music and reap the financial rewards ? I have nothing against these labels and are grateful for them and the work they do - but this kind of music belongs squarely in the public realm and to the Moroccan people who made it. It should be made free to all to access online.

This set very much compliments the novels and short stories by Paul Bowles. The stories read better after hearing this and the music also has more depth after being familiar with his narrations of the International Zone. The same with dust-to-digital's, Voices of the Mississippi boxset. If you end up owning that, best seek out the authors on the interview disc if foreign of them; Barry Hannah, the Ray Lum book by W. Ferris - "You live and learn. Then you die and forget it all", Eduora Welty (and her photographs taken in the 30s), Robert Penn Warren, etc.

Edited 8 years agoincredibly thorough, beautiful and unexpected reissue of a legendary recording many of us had had pieced together through glimpses on other releases. the whole is about the music, about the author, about a time and place long gone yet brought to life vividly by the recorded evidence.
the packaging is an almost ritual experience, of opening, feeling and piecing together, but also of geometric forms, colours and textures that form a sensual backdrop to otherwise arid words and alien sounds. the feeling is of an artist edition box, only more lavish and fitting to the content.
the words are the liner notes of the library of congress release plus extracts from the author's work notes plus annotations by the reissue researcher, all accompanied by photographs of the expedition. a glimpse into the mind and time of the author where completeness and thoroughness was less important than capturing the right sound at the right time.
the music in the end is the point of the release, a snapshot of morocco in 1959 as seen by the author, before (bowles thought) it would disappear in the changing political tide. the urgency and mystery of the different expressions comes across fully. hearing some of these pieces in their entirety (eg. the aouada trio, a three minute extract on tellus 23, here ten minutes long) is a privilege. the hypnotic effect of moroccan music is here intoxicating, more than in any recording i have heard.
in short, this is a unique, essential release, not for everyone but rewarding to anyone with an interest in the above.
