It's Called A Heart is generally seen as one of the weakest singles in the "classic" DM era ('83-'93). Even the band themselves it as much.
However, the b-side track Fly On The Windscreen is simply astonishing. It's one hell of a dark track (while still retaining some obligatory Gore lyrical kinkiness). Sonically the band had never sounded so serious.
It could be said that in the grand scheme of things Fly On The Windscreen should have been the a-side (being the perfect bridge between Shake The Disease and Stripped), and indeed given the rather lightweight pop overtones of It's Called A Heart (which really sounds chronologically out of place anyway) it seems obvious.
But of course the public were yet to see DM as a "serious" band.
Fly On The Windscreen is a classic, the single that never was. -
One of the greatest things they ever did. There's a subtle eccentricity to the lyrics that make it sound almost like a more electropop version of Wire. Great use of sampled bass too, and the way the verses and chorus seem to endlessly loop around and feed off each other, especially on the original 12".
