I've realised that the haunting Hungarian depression music sounds even more haunting on a worn slightly dirty record. perfect. Breakcore made beautiful this one. GET GET GET

Venetian Snares goes classical with ROSSZ CSILLAG ALATT SZULETETT, from the modern piano piece of "Sikertelenség" to the scrambled, reconfigured and breakbeated orchestra of "Szerencsétlen." He takes a snippet of Billie Holiday in "Öngyilkos Vasárnap" for a moody track, and reappropriates an entire string movement in "Hajnal" for a drum'n'bass workout. "Második Galamb" takes a quieter approach from the outset, though the breaks hold steady and the track grows in volume, particularly once the horns come in until it bursts into chaos. "Szamár Madár" is more straightforward, replete with operatic vocals, while the looped section of "Kétsarkú Mozgalom" gives it an itchy, paranoiac feel that's borne out in the rhythm. "Senki Dala" takes the album out with some guitar, as well, in a drifting, moody ambient piece. Quite nice.

Edited 13 years agoSzamar Madar, which I suppose is Venetian Snares' most recognizable track, is downright amazing. Otherwise, I'm not too enthused by the "punk" sound this group brings to the table, which can be harsh on the ears and sound like noise.
I must, however, concur with the other reviewer who pointed out that all Venetian Snares does is take masterful classical music and add a beat to it. The real credit should go overwhelmingly to the composer. -
Most listenable and accessible album by the Snares so far.
But also one of my favourites (#1 or #2).
Why ? First, because this album lives as a whole journey.
Secondly, this is marvellously orchestrated/arranged : samples, synths and drum breaks answer to each other in a perfect and unheard way so far. On "my downfall", Snares attempted to do this without sample, but he mainly did chords changing at the beginning of each bar, and that's all. Here, everything is beautiful because of these questions/answers and because all of the tracks with drums go to a pinnacle of melancholy and tortured sadness.
I prefer the "ambient" tracks to those in "my downfall" because i can understand their meaning. The mood of the album is kept throughout all the tracks.
In Snares' top releases, with Doll Doll Doll, Winnipeg and HCCBU. -
Everyone keeps calling this a breakcore album. This is clearly DnB.
Have these people even heard breakcore before?
These drums & their editing are far too close to late 90's Squarepusher to ever be considered breakcore.
If you want to hear breakcore, listen to Bomb20, DJ Scud, old Alec Empire, FFF, or Amboss.
