The majority of the material on this album was written as a result of group improvisations. There were no pre-rehearsals; the improvisation took place in the recording studio and much of the finished work contains original elements of those initial performances.

Recorded between September 1989 and April 1990 at Miraval Studios, Le Val, ; Conduimer Studio, Zerman di Mogliano, Italy; Marcus Studios, London; Air Studios, London; The Wool Hall, Bath; Ropewalk Studio, Dublin; Mega Studios, Paris, ; Eel Pie Studios, London. Mixed at Olympic Studios, London. Tracks A3, B1, B2 & B6 mixed at Eel Pie Studios, London. Cut at The Townhouse.

The UK release with the inner picture sleeve made of thin matt paper. There is another UK pressing which has a different matrix #, uses the same catalogue # but slightly modified on the sleeve European reissue also exists which uses the white Virgin logo branding.

Oh, how I loved Japan, etc, etc...... Mick Karn inspired me to take up bass at the age of 15. I love them all for trying on Rain Tree Crow, but David Sylvian seemingly tried to tried to turn it into a solo album with cheap session musicians under the guise of collaboration with former bandmates. So unfortunate to be David Sylvian, stuck with who he is. It must be so hard and torturous, as he'd try to have you believe. As for Sylvian's actual albums, I guess you just need to decide for yourself. There are some good moments, but the extraneous collabrations are much better than this.

This is not true as stated in many Japan biographies, including Mick Karn's.

I loved everything Japan and Sylvian released up to "Secrets Of The Beehive" but despite trying to listen to this several times I can't feel any emotions coming out from these "songs", I find this record extremely boring and emotionless, only a ray of sunshine sparks through "Every Colour You Are" and "Blackwater", the rest is impossible to bear...
Such a shame considering the 4 talented musicians involved!

I think this is an amazing record. This is Japan sounding nothing like Japan, and it`s not very poppy! You have to try again... It will grow on you...
