Edited 4 years agoMaking a compilation of Japan tracks is never an easy task to please all fans.
For starters, you have early Japan (which *Hansa* pretty much covered with the Assemblage compilation - with a couple of tracks from Quiet Life added), then you are left with anything from Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, basically.
"Richard Branson, come on down......."
This album steers clear of the first two albums yet it does offer a couple of nice B-sides and a track from Oil on Canvas.
Anyway, the reason I came here to mention this double vinyl offering was to say that the pressing does sound excellent.
The vinyl itself is thin as chuff, quite flimsy but the sound is awesome. Really punchy, bright and clear.
The song positioning on each side is a little ad-hoc with tracks being in no chronological order (of release) and
[*allegedly supervised by Sylvian and geared towards the Japanese market*, or not]
it's seemingly just thrown together to churn-out another compilation and make some more money for Virgin Records.
Interestingly, the album also contains a double page lyric sheet, which surprisingly and rather confusingly has lyrics to many other Japan tracks that aren't even on this compilation. Whoops! Not so much 'attention to detail' there, or rather - too much detail.
I avoided it like the plague when it was first released, mainly due to the fact that I already had every track that it contains.
Fast-forward almost 37 years (fucking hell, where did the time go?) and I recently bought a cheap NM copy for nostalgia's sake and I'm happy that I did, given how great it sounds.
If you fancy a trip down memory lane and want to hear some great Japan tracks, on vinyl in great quality, get it bought!
