This is a bit of a weird one for me. I am a big PG fan & have first UK vinyl pressings of all his albums & with the exception of the first two, the sound on them is fantastic. I am though loathed to splash out on both vinyl versions of this latest release & probably like many others bought this CD to “test the water.” I find the Bright Side impossible to listen to all the way through as IMO it is overly compressed. If I crank it up, whilst it does not distort, it becomes totally grating. For me the quieter tracks are the best on the Bright Side. That’s not to say they are all better than their Dark Side versions though. I feel the Dark Side hangs together better as a whole album & I will definitely play this more. I love the music & it’s in my top 2 for 2023 along with Steven Wilson’s The Harmony Codex.

I really didn't expect to find myself lost in a new Peter Gabriel album in late 2023, believing his best tunes were some 30 years behind him but here I am listening to the best album of the year. Fantastically melodic, beautifully produced like most of his back catalogue. Not a weak track on this album and an absolute joy. I've read previous comments from audiophiles saying the CD is brickwalled and too loud. I'm not hearing that and would say that the mastering is as good as you can expect from a CD which I bought to try and decide which mix of the album I should get on vinyl. Anyway, this is a rare 9/10 album in my humble opinion and a real lesson to the countless younger acts who haven't quite mastered the art of the perfect album.
