Edited 2 years agoThis album is mostly about Konitz and Marsh. They are great together and at times they make some very exciting music. Evans is largely taking the role of accompanist. Like many people, I just like his playing, can't say why I respond to it, but Evans had an uncanny ability to communicate through music. I enjoy hearing his piano in a different context, with the horns. This is a very nice record that grows in stature upon repeated listening. It's easy to find used and not too expensive. When I saw a nice clean copy, it was an instant cop, and I'm very glad to have it in my collection.

surely one of bill's best. kicks off with an arguably definitive version of steve swallow's 'eiderdown' and then goes on to include 'when i fall in love'; a reading that keith jarrett still follows very closely to this day. the addition of marsh and konitz just adds another layer of uniqueness to the affair. proof that bill was still evolving in his later years. essential stuff.
