Jazz Harmonica, who knew? Well, it works. Bill does his usual great job, albeit a little differently then we've heard before. Toots, whom i've never heard before, is excellent on harmonica.
The album in whole is very well recorded and sounds lively and fresh. -
Here we have a jazz beauty and sounds great. The sound is fresh, airy, punchy, and you can really enjoy the music.

Edited 3 years agoIf you're a fan of Thieleman's work, this is the best record in his catalog, and that is saying quite a lot.
If you're here for Bill Evans, you will find something quite different than his usual trio work, but also very familiar in other ways. This is a delightful pairing of jazz harmonica and piano. The selections serve as a ready platform for brilliant improvisation by both featured artists. Highlights include "Snow Peas", "Blue in Green" and "The Days of Wine and Roses", but pretty much every tune is a pleasant short musical adventure. Marc Johnson's bass work with Bill Evans is noteworthy, and this session is no different. If you pay attention, you will hear him bring the magic
I began listening to this in the '80s on cassette tape. At some point, my tape was so worn that the acoustic piano sounded like a Rhodes and the side B actual Rhodes had degraded to just an amorphous wash. Rather than try to find another copy, I just accepted those sounds, lol. Having found this near mint first pressing, I am pleased to enjoy the instruments as they were originally recorded. Piano sounds very natural here, Just a touch dark, to make sonic space for Toots' upper frequency range.
This is a great record to study if you are a jazz student, or just to put on over dinner and enjoy some beautiful melodies.

a very unique album for bill. larry schneider helping out on sax and flute and toots thielemans lending a very empathetic voice with his distinct harmonica. tune selection is ace, as well, being highlighted by an absolutely stunning 'blue in green.' one of bill's happiest albums and also one of his prettiest. highly recommended.
