Edited 4 years agoWinter holiday 1988/1989. Internet, email and mobile phones were still a thing of the future, so the only way to find out which songs were popular in foreign countries was simply getting there; be it by road, by rail or by air. And upon arrival, hoping to have a possibility to listen to popular radio stations, visit a record store or a paperware shop hoping to find a music magazine containing the current charts, or visiting a club or disco and write down some lines of lyrics of the unknown songs you love.
My parents and I were on winter sports holiday in Austria for two weeks, at a place far away from all the commercial hustle and bustle, thus far away from record stores, shopping centres and discos, and no commercial radio station to be heard. So none of us knew what tunes were popular then. All I could do was just sit and wait until holiday was over and have a look into our charts how things got changed.
I returning home in the Netherlands and finding "Bring Me Edelweiss" at No. 11 in our charts, having absolutely no clue what kind of song that was (it still had to chart when we departed).
"You were on Winter holiday, weren't you?"
"Yes, I was."
"You should have heard that song at least fifteen times a day for two weeks! It is that frequent on our radio stations right now!"
I turned on the radio. Our weekly chart show. The song was played. Sounded a bit like a hybrid of House and Schlagermusik. Too folky to be taken seriously in the clubs, too housey for Schlager parties. Those were my thoughts, back in a very early stage of the year 1989.
The song would ultimately have a chart run of 11 weeks, peaking at No. 3 between January 28 and February 11.
Three decades have ed meanwhile and now I can conclude that "Bring Me Edelweiss" started the so called "après-ski" music genre. The music that is heard in the afternoon, after the ski lift companies are offering their last ascents up the mountains and many holidaygoers are gathering in taverns to finish a day of skiing and to dance to this kind of music with their hard plastic ski boots still on.
Many tunes have appeared since, ranging from Anton feat. DJ Ötzi - Anton Aus Tirol, but none of them can compare to this one.
