Edited one year agoI am not a Neil Young fan. His voice always grated on me. Add his predictably incoherent Hollywood politics and he was an easy . Then a friend, who is a fan, explained his attraction to Young’s music and he gave me a list of records to listen to. The studio albums didn’t do much for me, but I was transfixed by this era’s live shows. Right around then, Young announced this bootleg series, cut from tape, so I bought CARNEGIE 1970.
It’s one of the greatest live performances I’ve ever heard and the pressing is quiet and detailed, as is the mix. I’m constantly purging my collection of albums I don’t find superb and, despite itching to get rid of this album since I bought it, all I have to do is listen to it and it’s place in my collection is safe.
If you’re a fan, this is an indispensable recoding and pressing. -
Wow, just wow. This is super. Great recording, quiet and silent, marvellous music-making. Intimate and touching.
-
Sounds great, super crips with no surface noise and really can you find 4 sides of music with more impressive lyrics? For me, this set list rivals any and I would throw Bob, Paul, etc up against this. I really dig this "vulnerable side" of Neil which makes the fuzzed out Crazy horse side all that sweeter. Cheers.

Fantastic mastering and pressing, but moreover, the setlist is astonishing. By the age of 25 Neil had a striking set of songs, and he delivered them perfectly...
Maybe it's the best solo - live album I know by any artist...
Compared to "live at the cellar door" - this one leans more on acoustic guitar than piano, both are great, just a matter of your preference. -
Edited 3 years agoSimply superb live sound, superb mastering and pressing. It felt like I was sitting there at Carnegie's.

Edited 3 years agoMastering is very good, great live performance and feels like being in the concert hall. Only downside is the bad pressing quality on my copy, Old Man is unlistenable due to distortion through the whole song. Other tracks are also impacted to a lesser extend. Again the bad quality control these days is being a real hurdle for the vinyl lovers.
-
I tend not to get too excited by live albums by any artists but this is something special. I have the European pressing which is beautifully clear bringing the event to life. I love the stripped back versions here "only love can break your heart" just melts me. Stunning. Not many people can hold an audience for 23 songs armed with just a guitar. Neil is and always will be a unique, once in a generation talent.

Edited 3 years agoI got a copy that had some awful scratchy distortion on Helpless but was able to exchange it for a new copy and this one sounds great! I wasn't too impressed with Young Shakespeare since it seemed like a lesser-version of Massey Hall with the same set-list but I like that this performance has a lot of different takes compared to the other live recordings of the early 70s NY era.
