One of two surprise releases in 2020 from black British collective Sault, this is a work of compelling power, a statement of shared identity and vulnerability. Like its similarly untitled follow-up, this album is matter-of-fact in its denouncement of police brutality against black citizens, but rather than being an angry protest record it unites musical strands, ionate voices from around the world to portray a message of black excellence, a celebration of the people against whom the odds are stacked, embodying Michelle Obama’s phrase “when they go low, we go high”.
