(Track A1, "Silence", was originally titled "Wicca". Its opening is a sample of Claudio Campos, a Capoeira master, speaking in Portuguese. He recites an adaptation of the Wiccan precept of the "Threefold Law" which translates back to English as:
"Be aware to the rule of thirds. What you give will return to you. You have to learn this lesson. You only receive what you deserve".)

One of my all time favourite records, Portishead's Third is sonically a world away from their earlier trip hop productions, taking influence from German Krautrock pioneers NEU!, Faust, CAN, Cluster, and Harmonia and the American psychedelic and synth duo's Silver Apples and Suicide.
There is a maturity and confidence in Beth Gibbons singing voice on Third which is world aways from her vocal fragility on Dummy. I witnessed their Australian tour of the album in 2011 and the energy and positivity of the bands performance really struck me too. They clearly had a great time recording and performing these songs. Highly recommended and an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

absolutely outstanding pressing. i have a secondhand copy that plays perfectly. it is mastered beautifully; rich and full, doesn't sound overly compressed. the vinyl itself is rather heavy and could be 180g but don't take my word for it. from what i have heard about these EU pressings is that the discs usually look awful but play fine, which is the case with my copy. the sleeve is also quite nice and has a deep blue-green finish.
i don't have any other copies to compare here. from what i have heard, the US 45rpm edition is absolutely atrocious and most copies are warped or scratched and the mastering is terrible. it is good that the EU version doesn't suffer from the same issues. if you want this album, go for the EU edition, it is worth it.
as for the music, this is one album that i personally believe to be a perfect 10. in my opinion, it is their best record and one of the best of the 2000s. it is shockingly creative and daring and visceral. listen to this when you're angry.
