            Dividing critical opinion at the time of release in 1986, this has aged rather gracefully and has gathered force since it first appeared. The album contains several David Sylvian classics (Taking the Veil, Laughter and Forgetting, Before the Bullfight and Wave) and is essential on the strength of these alone.

            The second disc restores all of the instrumental music that had been cut on the first CD issue of this album and is obviously the better for it.

            Unfortunately the 2003/2006 remaster/reissue adds 3 remixes to the first disc that should have been left off (they had to somehow justify splitting the album back up into two discs as it was intended) and the intro of Before the Bullfight shortened by approximately 25 seconds should have been left alone.

            Perhaps not the flat out classics that Brilliant Trees and Secrets of the Beehive are, don't overlook it; you'd be making a grave mistake!

                  David in 1986: "Russell, I'd need the most mystical-looking artwork you can muster. Here are my illustrated alchemy-themed books I'm basing my songs in for your inspiration. The title is Gone to Earth, so let us dive deep into the earth element with this".
                  David in 2018: "Oh, long time no see. Now I'm curating these as if they were a writer's complete oeuvre. So Yuka, I'd need the most period-piece-looking vérité snapshot you can find, '80s haircut included. The title is Gone to Earth, so let's bring the whole thing down to earth, right?".

                    Although it's missing some of the (weaker) instrumentals, the UK/Euro single disc edition (CDVDL1) sounds better than this 2CD set. This edition is overly-quiet, and even when volume-matched to the single disc it's still lacking something.

                      Sonically this is one of the best sounding records in my collection, even amongst all the remastered, MoFi, SACD's, and Half-Speed Masters. There's just something about Steve Nye's mix that is lush and deep. David's voice sounds like he's in the room with you, and things like Nelson's acoustic guitar and Steve Jansen's percussion are beautifully present. And of course the music is some of David's best IMO.

                        The sibilants are quite harsh on this one, and I never found the sound open or engaging. Always was wondering why everybody loved this album for its mastering...
                        Until I heard the general European press. Holy mother, is it fantastic ! This french one sounds like a turd in comparison.
