Anthrax – Among The Living

Found this pressing on a local second-hand record store for only 20 Euros. Cover was NM, but vinyl dirty as hell - reason for the low price. After washing it plays beautifully, so this was a real steal. Side A plays with lower volume than side B because its longer (appr. 27 minutes), but if I correctly European pressing from the 80's I used to own it was the same. A classic and it sounds so much better on vinyl compared to digital formats.

Not sure about all the negative reviews on the sound, mine sounds great!

For those interested in weird skip on "Caught in a Mosh".
The pressing without it exists.
It is Specialty one.
Unlike all Specialty and Allied issues that I've seen it has matte labels but not glossy.
Unlike all SRC pressings that I owned it has no EAST embossed on side 2.
And it is on Quiex-type translucent wax with mixed amber/grey colour.
Never seen before.

This is not called a remaster, but it might as well be. The mix is perfect, all elements being in perfect harmony. This 24-bit 96k release is alternately smooth as glass or sharp as a razor, as the music dictates. It's a gut punch that feels good.

The perfect thrash album! Production, riffs, guitar/bass tone, groove, attitude. Everything really came together for Anthrax on this album. Truth be told, Among the Living is probably the only album from them that still holds my interest as a whole. Persistence of Time comes as a close second, but it can't touch this. I'm happy to own a NM/NM first US pressing of this gem.

Wasn't happy with the quality/consistency on UK release (Anthrax - Among The Living).

Tested listening with grado open back headphones (which are quite bright), once cranked it sounds pretty good and slightly better than release (Anthrax - Among The Living), the highs seem slightly boosted but without any loss of bass, bass sounds good actually, but I need to record them both and compare on some software for a better test. Doesn't escape the issue with inner groove distortion, but it does seem to be not as bad as the UK release in this regard.

However I think the original recording might be the issue with distortion /quality (not that its terrible by any means, just wish it was a bit clearer all round). I may try a US copy in the future, though that doesn't seem free of problems!

Additionally the sleeve on this Japanese edition is made of slightly firmer cardboard and gives it a more robust feel than the UK sleeve.

I can attest to the other reviews, the sound gets better on side B. I have just bought Anthrax - Among The Living and its cut quieter which seems to help the sound. I am wondering if I need to get a US press to get the best sound.

This album was turning point to happier and crappier thrash metal worldwide. Cry for Indians! At least it's memorable crap.
