Edit: updating thread title & text to reflect current reality
Hello! A small group of developers at Discogs have been working on some “behind the scenes” improvements to the release page. Here are the details:
The Release page is one of the most complex pages on Discogs, and the most visited page type on Discogs. The page was originally created over 20 years ago, and has slowly evolved and changed over the last two decades.
In order to make certain performance, accessibility, seo, design and ux improvements, we needed a fresh start. We’ve completely rewritten the backend and frontend code for the release page. The new release page is paving the way for performance improvements we couldn't take advantage of previously, along with future design and experience improvements.
The Release page is also one of the most complex pages on Discogs and needs to work with an endless variation of crowdsourced Release data.
In other words: there are going to be bugs and edge cases and things we don't catch. If you notice Release page bugs, feel free to add them to this thread and we will fix them as soon as possible. -
Weetzie edited over 4 years ago
The new release page isn’t complete, but we wanted to give y’all a peek if you are interested. Currently the page is missing logged-in functionality, and links away from the page won’t work.
To test the new (incomplete and very-much-in-alpha) release page, please:
1. Follow this link: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/
2. Follow any of the release links on that page or use the “Show a random release” button to navigate to a random release (or draft release) in the database.
3. You won’t be able to search or navigate away from the release, so if you want to test a specific release, simply update the URL path of the release you want to see. For example, if I want to see the new release page for: https://discogs.cinepelis.org/Khruangbin-Mordechai/release/15522351 , then modify the URL to: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/Khruangbin-Mordechai/release/15522351
4. Notice an issue or have ? Use the “” button on the right side of the new release page. You can write a comment and even add a screenshot. If you reach a page that doesn’t load or have some general , please add to this thread. Thanks!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why are you asking me to test this; it looks the same as the current release page?
A: Great, that’s the hope! We are doing our best to test the page, but we acknowledge that due to the high variability in release page data, we simply won’t be able to catch everything ourselves. The more edge-case quirks we catch now, the fewer people will have to deal with those bugs in the future. But, there’s no pressure to test, we are simply trying to get in the habit of releasing work for community as soon as possible.
Q: Why was this project prioritized?
A: The Discogs release page has been growing and changing for 20 years. That might not sound too old, but in code-years, the release page was basically an ancient tech-debt-Frankenstein-monster. It was difficult to maintain, improve, and is suuuuper slow to load. A lot of the performance improvements needed just couldn’t be done without a major overhaul. The release page is also the most visited page on Discogs, so improvements to this page will have a positive impact for the majority of our community.
Q: Why is the design unchanged?
A: The majority of development work was backend, and we wanted to be sure to deploy these changes as soon as possible. Once we’ve rolled out the new release page to all s, future design and UX improvements will be much easier to tackle.
Q: Why are links broken? Why can’t I search?
A: That functionality will work eventually. For now, we really only want to be sure the layout is identical to the old release page and all data loads as expected.
Q: Wait, will you be changing the URL path?
A: Nope! This new release URL is just for testing.
Q: When and how will this new page be rolled out?
A: We hope to start a rollout to a very small amount of logged out traffic in November. We will gradually increase the rollout. Initially, we will release this new page to just logged-out s. (Meaning, you’ll have a temporary window to “opt out” of the new page, just by logging in). -

It should be a black button on the right side of your page. It should appear both on desktop and mobile.
Here's an example screenshot.
It's just a simple widget that's separate from this Release page work, so not a big deal if you can't see it. It sounds like the widget gets blocked via any ad-block or privacy-enhancing extensions, so perhaps that's the issue? https://help.hotjar.com/hc/en-us/articles/115012500387-What-Browsers-Do-Hotjar--

Thanks for checking the mobile view!
It's true, the "Desktop" button has been removed, but only because the mobile view will no longer be a different view. The new release page should be fully responsive now and so there is no longer a separate, simplified mobile view. In essence, the view you see from your phone should be the same as the desktop view, but with some of the components rearranged slightly.
I know that's probably going to be an adjustment, but hopefully not too frustrating once you are used to the change. When you view the new release page from your phone, is there something missing or "out of order" that is bothersome? -

If you are viewing the page at a normal width, you should see that "more images" link, but that link disappears when you reduce the width of your browser page. That matches the current mobile release page... but since the Release page wasn't really responsive before, it didn't have the same in-between states. I'll mention this different to the team and see if we should add back the "more images" link for some of the "in-between" screen sizes.

Do we need to do that?
Ha, I had the exact same question! Let me check in with a few database stakeholders to see if there is consensus. Because yeah... alphabetization (by first name) isn't really the most helpful.
Edit: It looks like the new release page is simply sorting by Artist ID. -

Bummer, I was wrong. The new Release page was just returning those credits sorted by Artist ID. Which is even less helpful than sorting alphabetically by first name. (Although in certain cases it almost seems logical / like they are sorted based on popularity).
I think for now, we will likely mirror the way the old Release page is sorting, but we can certainly consider a change in the future. To ensure a smooth rollout we are attempting to make as few changes as possible for the initial release. -

<ul class="simple_1xANie">

<li>Matrix / Runout<!-- --> (Side B label)<!-- -->: <!-- -->(SHVL 804B)</li>
[etc…]
</ul>
</div>
Each <li> is just a plain text string – save for the empty and useless comment tags – without separating description from data.
That omission never made sense to me.
Description, the description free text field, and the data field should each have at least its own <span class="class_name"> tag, so that they can be e.g. modified separately using custom CSS (which is what I'm actually doing since years and which works nearly everywhere except BAOI).

Speaking of custom CSS, I see the new system is appending a random-ish string to all CSS class names and element IDs. Seems unnecessarily complicated. What is the reason for this?
I guess we will have to use something like span[class^=trackTitle_] (untested) instead of span.trackTitle. -

I guess it's because they use css-modules https://github.com/css-modules/css-modules in their framework which imho is a good thing.
We use the same at work and get the same kind of random strings after the class name. -

Thanks for this, and for asking for . I've just tried loading a few releases, including this 55-disc monster: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/Various-Decca-Sound-55-Great-Vocal-Recitals/release/9334012
I didn't notice any faster page loading, even for the huge submission, but if it decreases server and browser load, that's great.
I also don't notice any major differences in UI, which is what you want.
Comparing https://discogs.cinepelis.org/Various-Decca-Sound-55-Great-Vocal-Recitals/release/9334012 in Firefox 81.0 on MacOS 10.15.6, the only comments I have right now are:
– The typeface and size are the same to me as the existing page: the only difference is a slight decrease in leading (line height), which is fine with me.
– The Series entry has now been moved from under the label entry in the main release information at the top of the page to be with other LCCN entries underneath the track listing. I don't know whether or not that's intended, but it seems to me a good idea to have it with Label, as it's more 'label' (branding) information than 'company' information.
– Track headings have been moved left, appearing just to the right of the track position rather than aligned with the index track and track titles. I think the existing layout (heading titles aligned with index/track titles) makes more sense.
– Only the first few images (about 20 – I haven't counted) load in the test version. This might have been a limitation placed on it while testing, but I mention it in case it's not intended.
– Both the main column and the right-hand column are wider, so that the right-hand column overlaps the track listing. Needs a responsiveness tweak.
– Oddly, the Recommendations and Reviews sections at the bottom of the page are narrower. They now match the width of the main submission column, so this was probably an intended tidying-up.
– I also don't see any button on the page. If there is one that's hidden from view, it's not a text-based button like 'Buy CD', as no results come up for a word search for 'feedb'.
Hope that helps. I'll try to look into it more at a later date. -

This.
There's no quality filter (because there are no useful guidelines) on the Notes (in particular). Full of random tat so best defaulted to collapsed.

Making it narrower visibly resulted in
- the stats first getting squashed
- then the stats getting relaid out into one column
- then most of the stats moving down to below recommendations
It made no difference to the large image size.
The two images above were with my browser screen at maximum and, certainly, at the same browser width in the same session.

I'm fine with the changes. They don't bother me. And thanks also for getting us to test this out.
Just a few comments:
- I'm seeing the stepping down of labels below the "Labels" heading, where the number of labels goes more than one line. That seems a bit awkward, but nothing awful.
- I've tested two multi-disc CDs with track artists. One, https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/Donna-Summer-The-Donna-Summer-Anthology/release/2429273 , makes better use of the space (in my view) by pushing all the artists and the tracks to the left of the screen; one, https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/Various-The-Best-Ever-Choral-Music-Collection/release/15442912 , retains the current formatting where the artists are right justified to the centre of the track block. I've always disliked this latter formatting, so the left-justified formatting suits me fine. It looks like the difference might be because of the use of headings in the centre-justified version.
- The new release page widens the space for the information on the right (collection, marketplace etc.). I'd prefer if this was actually narrower than currently.
- I also don't have the hover zoom functionality on the pictures. Considering that I'd prefer it if clicking on the images took us straight to the image set, and not to a scrolling set, this is a minor irritation to me.
Is providing in this thread better, or via the button? -

I really like being able to collapse sections when viewing Discogs on a smaller screen (usually my phone). It’s most helpful when navigating in and out of Master Releases and cycling between versions of complicated releases with a million credits. Not having to scroll through that extra data helps whenever I’m using Discogs in a record store or digging for records wherever. If I had to scroll through all that data, Discogs would probably be too tedious to in those types of settings.

Hey all, thanks for the ! Sounds like quite a few of you find the collapsable component functionality important to maintain. I'll chat with the team about this more - but I assume it's something we can add.
Although we are attempting to maintain the current design of the release page as much as possible on desktop, the new mobile version of the page is fundamentally different and so there are several (mostly minor) design differences. If anyone is interested in having me list out all of the design differences, I'm happy to do that.
And to keep you all in the loop, here's an overview of which bugs we've fixed so far and what we are working on:
FIXED BUGS:
- Fixed loading of Releases with extensive tracklists. Example: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/release/8988295
- Labels: formatting for label section when there are multiple lines
CURRENT BUGS:
Currently being worked on:
- Font size: font size inconsistencies
- Credits: artist names aren't alphabetical
- Image Zoom functionality: click on image to Zoom isn't working (and other UX improvements)
Bugs in our Backlog:
- Images: not all images are loading in gallery view
- Credits: artist info popover missing
- Collapsible components: the ability to collapse Notes, etc. is missing
- Responsive Design: columns overlap for certain releases when browser width decreases
- Draft error: example: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/release/14441583
Bugs or improvements that won’t block the initial rollout (to logged-out s):
These are changes we will consider and possibly prioritize, but the work won’t block the start of a gradual rollout.
- button: some s aren’t seeing the button. (Likely a result of browser settings, privacy restrictions, - incognito sessions, etc. This button isn’t a permanent feature of this page).
- Responsive Design: Layout improvements needed for browsers with width less than 1025px
- Series: data should be under Label and not in "Companies, etc." section
- BAOI field: data is unstructured
- Track headings: alignment differs from current Release page
- Lists: limit the number of Lists displayed on a Release -

when I open https://discogs.cinepelis.org/Various-Decca-Sound-55-Great-Vocal-Recitals/release/9334012 loads almost immediately whereas https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/Various-Decca-Sound-55-Great-Vocal-Recitals/release/9334012 takes around 15 seconds to load -

Thanks for testing those longer tracklist releases, mmmmmore81!
Good catch, releases with long tracklists are loading pretty slow currently. We will be releasing another change to how we are handling releases with very long tracklists soon, which should improve loadtime. -

Hi. Has my display issue been captured?
Yes, I'm describing that issue as "Responsive Design: Layout improvements needed for browsers with width less than 1025px". Although I suppose that description is making some assumptions; it would help to know your browser width when you experience this issue from your desktop. http://howbigismybrowser.com/
We've released one more fix...

this seems 'sorted' now - the new version opens in a different sized browser tab. If I manually adjust the zoom - I get the intended display. -

We've released several more fixes and have more on the way. Here's an update:
FIXED:
- Fixed loading of Releases with extensive tracklists. Example: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/release/8988295 We’ve also started to paginate tracklists that are over 50 tracks long. (Let us know if you have any !)
- Labels: formatting for label section when there are multiple lines
- Credits: artist name alphabetization
- Image Zoom functionality: click on image to Zoom and other UX improvements
- Font size: font size inconsistencies. Font size should now follow your browser’s default size. So depending on your browser settings, you might still see some inconsistencies.
- Series: data should be under Label and not in Companies, etc. section
- Draft error: example: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/en/release/14441583
BUGS:
Currently being worked on:
- Responsive Design: columns overlap for certain releases when browser width decreases
- Localization: several 18n improvements
- Cart count missing from header (if you have items in cart)

Sorry if I've missed something!
You've reported a few things, do you mean that you can't collapse sections on a mobile device? Or the fact that the layout is different on mobile (the release image is larger)? Or was there something else? -
Show this post
OK, thanks! I'll review this again with the team.
That was actually a purposeful change suggested by our UX designer, but I can see that the more image-centric view moves important data down below the fold and is a little awkward for narrower browser widths... so I can definitely see the argument either way. I'll make sure we review your and discuss further. Thanks! -

Fixed!
We've fixed all these bugs too:
- “Show Purposes” button not working
- Default local is ‘en’ rather than empty
- Keyboard shortcut menu not working
- Track headers sometimes cause display issues
And, AndyEvans2, I've chatted with the team about how there are some awkward layout states on the new release page for narrow browser windows (AKA the release image gets larger as page width decreases). We hope to get a little design guidance before making a change, but definitely plan to make improvements. Thanks for the !
Aaaand, we've started a 1% rollout of the new Release Page! It's only shown to 1% of logged out traffic currently, but we'll keep testing, fixing bugs, and eventually increase that percentage.
If anyone happens to notice any Release page issues while logged out, we would love to hear about them. Thanks! -

1. There's a place in the reviews with "%number% Helpful" link and when it's "5 Helpful" it sounds a little bit strange in English (at least for me) and even more in Russian. Maybe it would be better to have it as something like "5x helpful review"? Or maybe add number to translated string with pluralization so translators can better fir translation to their language?
2. When you hover above rating stars it shows "Star" svg title instead of description "Rate as..." text - see screenshot.
https://i.imgur.com/7KGJKs4.jpg
3. Dates (reviews dates, last sold date, release date) and countries are not translated, but I think it's a little bit more complicated thing for developers (especially with countries)
4. When you click "More images" zoom, permalink, edit and close buttons are not translated (don't know if they should be on the demo test page) -

We'll look into this.
It's only happening from the https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/ URLs, and shouldn't be impacting logged out s who are served the new release page from the standard release URL. But it's still very annoying for testing... hopefully we'll find an easy fix.

The new release page looks good. There are a few differences I noticed, and a few bugs.
- The posibility to display large tracklists in chunks is very neat! However, it does not work if there are a lot of index tracks (perhaps the code counts each index track as just 1). See: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/Карл-Маркс-Капитал-Критика-Политической-Экономи-Том-П/release/9856208
- On the long tracklists: switching from page 1 to page n should incorporate some functionality that moves the page to the top of the track view. Currently, the tracks move out of sight when switching pages.
- The bar with images does not scroll correctly on pages with a lot of images. See for instance: https://release-page.discogs.cinepelis.org/上田-雅美-山口-裕史-近藤-嶺-グローベス明里-大神-オリジナルサウンドト/release/5313620/image/SW1hZ2U6Mjk5NTc1MTg=
Going from left to right, the image bar keeps getting thrown around until the end of the list is reached.
- Non-square images on the imagebar are not centered but gravitate towards the top. Bug or feature?
- Previously during looking at images, viewing a new image which hadn't been loaded fully would present a low-rez version. Now it gives blank space, and then pops in the loaded image. This is changed functionality.
- Outside of fullscreen, the edge of the page is right next to the left edge of the browser windows.
Previously there was some space. In general, the new view looks more squeezed than the old. -

We've been rolling out to a percentage of logged out s to test, then rolling back and making fixes and improvements. So, no, the new page isn't released to all logged out traffic yet. Currently, if you are logged out and you see that "" button on a Release page, you'll know you are seeing the new Release page. (It's likely that button will be removed in the future, but we'll keep it on the page for the new few months). -

Thanks!
It's the vertical scrolling functionality. On PC browsers this allows quick navigation of the images using the mouse-wheel click, this is especially important for releases with huge amounts of images.
On mobile, this is all but essential. The regular image view has always presented low-rez images to me, and this seperate page presents them beautifully.
I also noticed a new bug through this by the way. Check how the new release page shows images on mobile. -

This page makes it much easier to compare images of various versions. -

What do you […] appreciate about that view that you don't get with the other horizontal "gallery" style view?
There are many instances – especially when comparing releases – when I know that I need a simple flat view of images on a separate page and not a semi-transparent gallery layer, because the latter gets in my way.
Another good use is for looking at tall images that are limited to 600 px width, but can be thousands of pixels high: you can make better use of the available viewport in the flat page mode.
So it's an option.
Options are a Good Thing™. -

I agree with loukash and will put my two cents on top of theirs. The cleanliness of a pure, linear page dedicated to all of the images is easier to scan and review, especially when comparing release details such as label variations. I’ve always found the “gallery” style image page to be a distraction from the images themselves.
I would like to see the linear image page as the default, with the addition of a “View as gallery” option next to the “Update these images” button or “Edit Images” link.
This brings up another issue … why are the “Edit Images” link at the top of the page and the “Update these images” button at the bottom of the page worded differently? They both provide access to the exact same image update functionality and should probably use the same text. -

Those links should not be there at all!
Weetzie: One fo the biggest issues with image editing in general is that s can access the https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/1/images/update page without ever reading submission comments and image edit history on https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/1/history !
This is a serious pain in the ass especially when dealing with serial offenders (mostly sellers, duh) who insist that their images are the "bestest" and the "correctest" when they are not.
In other words:
The only way to access https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/1/images/update should be via https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/1/history -

I think you should, in general, be very careful with removing any existing functionality. Like you yourself have said, the release page has existed for eons basically as it is, and that also means /submitter usage and workflow have apapted and formed around this. Even though from a back-end vantage point something serves no purpose that does not means the same is true for the s. -

This link isn't just used to add images but also to see who added images. Also there are many valid use cases for clicking there directly. E. G if it's one of the subs you created.
As you have said. Options are a good thing.
Voting on invalid images would sort out the other problem in a much better way, directly at the core.
As sellers will adapt to use history and the image link if they want to add their image. -

Hey, thanks. It actually looks neat now. Better than the old standard view!
One other thing I noticed however: you've decided to increase the size of the thumbnail on the mobile release page without increasing the resolution, which leads to a very pixelated image. Solution is either to decrease the size or show a higher rez picture. I don't know if the latter is feasible (it would be nice).
EDIT: Another bug: If you open the image view and close it, the page is stuck (you cannot scroll up/down) anymore. -
