Sales History Calculations Are Now More Precise Than Ever

Discogs is committed to being a free and accessible resource, which includes making some of our sales data public so collectors and sellers can understand the value of their vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, and other physical formats. To help everyone find the best price for their music, we share the current sales history of all items sold in the Discogs Marketplace.

Now, this data is even more conclusive. In October 2023, we completed some improvements to the way that sales history is calculated.

Additional recent transactions are now factored into release value. The result is a more accurate representation of each release’s lowest, median, and highest sales prices as well as your estimated Discogs Collection value.

These improvements may cause a minor change in both Collection value and individual release value. This slight increase or decrease will be similar to the typical fluctuation that occurs every time an item is purchased because value is based on sales history.

What is sales history?

Sales history is a public resource that provides the estimated value of music releases. Discogs tracks the sale of every item that has been sold in the Marketplace, then calculates that release’s lowest, median, and highest value based on the 30 most recent transactions. This data can easily be accessed for every release as long as that item has been sold on Discogs. On any release page within the Database, you’ll see this information under the Statistic section (or Sales History in the Discogs app). Select “Last Sold” (or “Sales History” in the app) to find a more detailed breakdown of recent sales history, which includes the average price, the condition of each item sold, and a chart to track trends over time.

What is my estimated Collection value?

You can use the Discogs Collection tool to virtually catalog and organize the items in your physical collection. Sales history fuels your estimated Collection value, which is automatically calculated to show you the combined lowest, median, and highest prices of the items you’ve cataloged. The Collection tool has even more amazing features, such as the ability to search, sort, organize, and rate the music you own.

How does sales history help with pricing items for sale?

If you sell music, you can use this free data to price your inventory. When you list something for sale, Discogs will suggest a price based on the version, condition, and recent sales history. You can also see more sales data on a release page by selecting “Last Sold” (or “Sales History” in the Discogs app).
