Jimmy Smith – Root Down - Jimmy Smith Live!

This cut really is off the hook good sounding on my system.
Jimmy's playing is almost 3D and centered.
A nice percussion ride in the right channel.
Cymbals can be a little splashy in the background, especially opening track.
Arthur's guitar work sounds very complementary to the mix.

I would say 9/10 with great QRP pressing quality.

Must grab if you are a fan of Jimmy Smith!

I am a bit disappointed by the audio quality. I would (also) go for the CD (like 731455980523) with original length on some of the numbers (e.g. "Sagg Shootin' His Arrow" 11:47 on the CD and 7:10 here on the vinyl. And also listen to the Spotify version that has an even longer version of "Sagg Shootin' His Arrow" with a spoken intro by the man himself. But what a killer swinging live session!

Just cleaned this up and gave it a spin. Also listened to my 1972 version again, back to back.

I’m not hearing much of a difference between the two. Soundstage is basically identical. The original might have just a bit more dynamics, especially in the high end.

This new release sounds like they were trying to just make it sound like the original to my ears so if you have a good ‘72 copy, I’d say this won’t beat that. My ‘72 copy is more like VG for the beginning tracks on both sides and otherwise VG+ so I’m happy to have such a clean copy that represents the original mastering

such a killer demonstration of Jimmy Smith and combo, beautiful press and sound, another winner from Acoustic Sounds Series, and probably my favorite Jimmy Smith record of all time.

You won’t be disappointed , a fantastic set and pressing. Recommended.

Disappointed by this AP Jimmy Smith Roots Down audio quality. 7/10. Not much sound stage. The session itself is cool. Probably nothing to do with the mastering/pressing. My equipment is fine. Other Verve & co generally sound fantastic.

I’ve listened to this record since it was released on CD. This LP is a whole new experience. Great balance of instruments with Jimmy out front. Bass is strong. Drums are funky. One of the best jazz reissues of the year. Don’t hesitate with this version!
