Notes
Repress of the US CD to vinyl with printed barcode on back. Missing 2 tracks instead of the usual 1 almost all versions of the album are missing. Track 4 (known to fans as "Hankie") and track 19 (known to fans as "Stone In Focus") are the missing tracks.
Although all 25 tracks (23 on this version) have titles, the "game" Aphex Twin was playing this time around is that every track title should be a photograph instead of words. Thus track titles are not listed here (with the exception of Blue Calx, which had already appeared a year earlier in a compilation).
Although the versions reprinted by "1972" are commonly believed to be counterfeits they were in fact licenced from Sire records (the US distributor of the album) without the knowledge of WARP Records (the original distributor) or Aphex Twin.
Sticker on front cover reads:
"a landmark of the Ambient genre: Richard D. James' soulful, electronic holy music continues to bewilder nearly two decades later. if11"
(same as 2012 release on same label.)
Text on back in bottom right hand corner reads:
1972 PO Box 11444 Oakland California 94611 USA
©&℗ 1994 & 2012 Sire Records Company. Produced under license from Sire Records Company.
Manufactured by Rhino Entertainment Company, a Warner Music Group Company. All Rights Reserved. Made in the U.S.A. Marketed by International Feel LLC.
(same as 2012 release on same label.)

Great pressing. I bought used, and cleaned- barely any surface noise whatsoever. Don’t trust the negative reviews saying it’s a bad press- it sounds great.
-
Edited one year agoI how crackly this was even from sealed and even after ultrasonic cleaning. It's a noisy press. It is this album on vinyl though but the CD sounds infinitely better in this isolated case because it is the CD pressed onto vinyl. I wish I could afford the original pressing but this budget repress for £50 was all I could afford. I've moved it on as I await a proper repress.

No real issues with my pressing of this. Certainly nothing on the scale of a lot of what's been mentioned here. Pretty decent package all told, I reckon.

Do yourself a favour and don’t buy this pressing. It’s just a CD rip and doesn’t even include the vinyl track list which is different. The prices I’m seeing for it here are extortionate too. I returned mine to the store and got my money back. Just buy the CD or if you’re a rich person get the original non brown vinyl.

Gotta say I was prepared for the worst based on some of the other comments here but I was pleasantly surprised. Pressing quality on my copy is pretty good, nice heavy vinyl and high quality cardstock tip on gatefold jacket. The missing tracks are a bit disappointing but if you're looking for a marginally less expensive way to own this album on wax, this isn't a bad option.

The pressing was very poor, returned to the store. Was also disappointed by missing tracks and CD to Vinyl remaster. Avoid this release.

Edited 3 years agoSaw this at my local record store so I figure I'd give it a chance even though I was aware of all the quality complaints. There are some minor pops/ minor surface noise at the beginning of a few tracks but it's still nice to listen to on vinyl even though I know it's sourced from CD which is kind of lame. I can't for the life of understand why Warp doesn't do a proper vinyl reissue of this timeless classic the way they did for ICBYD and the RDJ albums. It would sell like hot cakes no doubt and bring the label a little credibility back from on the terrible music they've been releasing for the past 10 years.

Just want to throw in my opinion that this pressing sounds pretty good, even though it comes from a digital source and omits two tracks

Edited 7 years agoBrilliant album (obviously) but in regards to pressing quality it is not as bad as people make it out to be but it's not exactly good either. The sound is clean BUT some detail is lost and the midrange is way to high which means you can only play it at a modest volume that said if you have a decent equaliser you can sort this out. It's nice to have it on vinyl so buy it if you want it, it's not awful, however for clarity I'd go for the CD plus it's easier to relax to a CD isn't it? I guess some people feel cheated because it has been said the vinyl was pressed from CD although there is no actual proof to back that up.
