very cool info about the provenance of the RMs below...thanks.
this SACD sounds fantastic! very stoked that DCFC got the SACD treatment. and, yes, it's a shame no other albums have been done. but, enjoy this one cuz it's excellent! -
Edited 6 years agoThe Super Audio CD is much easier on the ears when comparing to the CD, nothing to do witih the format although definitely great they used the original analog stereo master to create the DSD master from, but everything to do wtih the mastering for this release.
Around 4dB headroom on average on each track and 3~5dB more dynamic range vs. the CD, Transatlanticism suffers "loudness wars" mastering on the CD version (not as bad as Kintsugi or Thank You For Today) that is almost completely alleviated on the SACD. It scores a DR10, better than any other DCFC release as far as dynamics go.
Shame they didn't get KG to master the SACD as I expect it would be even better, but this is definitely the go to version of Transatlanticism. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers for one of the 2LP versions but he used the DSD files, so here you're getting the source files the vinyl lacquers were cut from.
How about that? =D
(Confirmed by Chris Walla, who is a bit of an audiophile himself)
