Of course Wilco was brilliant and part of one of the greatest live bands on the road but they never transferred that fire to record. When Mayo ed the band yes they lost some of the roots and smoothed out the rougher edges but the albums became more consistent and had the hits to back it up.
Having seen both versions of Dr Feelgood I have to say the shows were some of the best I’ve seen by any artist but it was the John Mayo years that did it for me. Live and on record.
