Edited 5 years agoThis is a great sampling of Gil's 1st 3 albums at Flying Dutchman. This contains all of the tracks from "Pieces Of A Man" and some poetry recitations from "Small Talk" and "Free Will" (and also the best song from the later, "Get Our Of The Ghetto Blues" plus "Did You Hear What They Said" which is good but sad, like most of Free Will's music).
The mastering on here is typical of 1980s CDs, which is to say very good for dynamic range, but perhaps a little quiet for those who want to crank it (though, honestly, once you come to appreciate DR why would you?). If you are a completest and can afford it, you may want to get his 1st 3 CDs available as imports from the early 2000s. They seem to have done a good job with those in the old fashioned way of not clipping the sound files unlike the 2014/17 Pieces of a Man, that is to be avoided.
If that is too deep for your pockets, try this bargain disk. I it I'm a bit partial to it because it was my introduction to Gil's work. If you are not familiar with Gil's early music, the 1999 compilation "Ghetto Style" is an even better sampling of his early stuff, though I don't know how the remastering was handled on that one.
