Reviews

This release and its sibling mid-2010s BMG ELP remasters are witchcraft as far as I'm concerned - somehow taking some of the lowest-fidelity releases in rock history and turning them into masters any audiophile would find acceptable. Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery are the crown jewels of that effort, two of the greatest progressive rock albums ever given sonic clarity rivaling that of any other albums of their era. Andy Pearce & Matt Wortham, take a bow, this is how a remaster should be done.

Cool I'm the only person to review this as of now. My review is pretty simple, I say BUY THIS 2 CD VERSION! I'm sure there's sacd or other high end lovers who would scoff at this, but for me, the 1st disc in this set, the 2016 remaster (I believe it is), is my favorite version of this album I've heard. When listening to Tarkus I want to hear the precision is the synths and every fine detail layed onto the record, and this blows away my original u.s. cotillion pressing on that regard. This remaster really is what led me to fall in love with this album. Nothing is muddy or sluggish, it all is crisp and precise.
Disc 2 I could mostly take or leave. With how good the disc 1 remaster is it renders the Steven Wilson remix nearly useless. It's fun to hear a different take on the album I guess.. but to my ears he just left it sounding quite dull, lifeless, and cold sounding. The bonus tracks after his remixed album and nice to have though.
As with the rest of the ELP 2-cd Reissues the booklet with the story of the album and quotes from the band is great and quite immersive for people such as myself, born 27 years after this album was released.
It's a great package for a good price, even copies imported to the U.S. are only $15 or so, so grab one!!!
