It's a real shame that a great written album like Painkiller got a remaster that sounds terrible (at least in my opinion). The dynamic of the sound was heavily flattened in an attempt to make this remaster as loud as possible. Instruments sound as if they were crammed into a small can and made to fight for space: when guitar solo begins, drums, rhythm guitar and bass are crushed by it. Same thing with vocals.
No clarity, no space, just awfully flat recording, which unfortunately is typical of Judas Priest remasters from early 00's -
I have otherwise this exact version, but the back inlay says:
© 2001 Sony Music Entertainment (UK) LTD -
Heavy metal is a music full of stereotypes. From lyrical themes to sounds, from musicians’ attitude to technical exasperation, everything is codified in order to be shocking, explicit and excessive. What makes heavy metal great is precisely its teenage naivety, its lack of any pretentiousness, and its unfiltered energy. Judas Priest are heavy metal in its purest essence. They contributed to create every cliché of the genre, and they are proud of it. After years of success and glory, they gathered all their energy in Painkiller, a monstrous metal meltdown with modern and powerful sounds, characterized by destructive violence and great melodies. Published just before classic heavy metal disappearance, Painkiller is one of the apex of the genre: an high speed ride on a motorbike, with iron’s brilliance, gasoline smell and engine roar.
