Edited 7 years agoOverall a real solid reissue. The quality of the case, liner and tape are all very nice. The packaging itself is minimal, and it works. Just a simple foldout of the image and tracklisting on the back. No graphics on the tape, just a mock spraypaint effect of the album title. As far as the sound quality is concerned, it sounded great to my ears. Nice warm cassette tape sound. No overwhelming hissing and the bass notes hit particularily well. I think a good release for the cassette medium. I haven't heard the vinyl edition, but I would imagine that this is just as good, and a cheaper alternative if you want to have an analog copy.
The stand-out tracks to me are: "Champion Sound", "The Red", "The Heist", "React", "Survival Test", "Starz", and "No Games".
"The Heist" is one track in particular I would like to give props to. For me it's one of the best tracks on the album. Jay Dee's production is a very fitting backdrop for the storytelling, obscure, lyrical style that Madlib is known for. The sample of 'Persuasion' by Throbbing Gristle is perfect for this. It gives the track a real eerie, off-kilter vibe that compliments the odd vocal delivery. Another part I dig about it is that it's about this dark & messed up situation of a heist, but is at the same time one of the funnier moments on the tape. -
Love the sample of Kraftwerk's 'Ohm Sweet Ohm' from the 'Radio-Aktivität' album at the end of "No Games".
