Considering the age of the original recordings, this 1976 US release sounds absolutely amazing! So happy I was able to find this at a local shop and paid no shipping. Very happy to acquire this.

Edited 4 months agoGreat compilation, amazing recordings, decent enough sound (seeing as how many were probably mastered from 78s that were then transferred to tape). My only issue is the auto-coupling, an annoying contrivance that only existed for a short time but, for some reason, was endemic to almost all of these releases. Looking for a decent-sounding non auto-coupled release if anyone can recommend it. This appears to be the only one mentioned as non auto-coupled, but some of the non-US releases don't say one way or the other: https://discogs.cinepelis.org/release/26039962-Charlie-Parker-BirdThe-Savoy-Recordings-Master-Takes. Once one of these comes up for sale, I may grab it.

This 2xLP comprises every officially released piece that the great alto saxophonist recorded for Savoy from 1944 to ’48 showcasing his flawless tone played with depth and feeling. Many of the pieces are played at a breakneck tempo as the sheets of notes that he’d call forth from his horn sounded literally impossible to play- just listen in awe & try to hang on
This maybe:
• The one essential jazz album?
• The most important collection in American music in print?
• The most rewarding musical compendium in the world?
The mark of a genius. -
Edited 4 years agoWhich pressing is the one to pick? How about the japanese pressing or the german one?

Edited 6 years agoA prelude to the greatest quintet of all time, in conjunction with some of the best sounding recordings I have heard among Parker's works.
