My favorite Ellington album. I call it Duke's ballroom album. One of the most popular, radio shows in New York in the Mid 50s was Martin Bloch's Make Believe Ballroom. Duke hit it right in the pocket with this album. Very appropriate to include Dancing In The Dark because that's the overriding feel of the whole album.
There was something magical in the air in NY in September and October of 1957.
Coltrane's Blue Train was also recorded in this period (9/15/57). I'm sure there were others. Look at the alignment
of the planets...Venus, Neptune and Pluto doing a love dance while Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus are also having a
convivial conversation. Its all reflected in this gorgeous album.

One of my top 3 favorite Ellington albums. I guess I like the small band-- Back to Back and Orbits are my other two favorites.

Probably my favorite Ellington recording on Columbia. Drop dead gorgeous versions of songs that you’ve heard before but not in such seductive arrangements. There is a trade-off, however, between owning the Mono and owning the Stereo versions of this recording. The Stereo version is wide-screen panoramic and mind blowing. But it is actually missing one short track that ends the side one of the Mono version. So you have to get both Mono and Stereo versions of Indigos if you want the full session!

Extremely lush, spaced-out Ellington renditions. Highly recommended for the curious.
