Edited one year agoThere was a 10 minute ‘Look at Life’ film from 1961 about the making of this record shown on the UK’s ‘Talking Pictures TV’ Channel on December 11th. Much was of the actual recording at Abbey Road, but there was a brief section showing the cutting of the disc from the tape, and the master cut being taken by van to the pressing plant. It shows the silvering and electroplating processes, although a few steps are left out, and a shot of a long line of manual 45 presses (which was used in the opening shots of the film ‘ Telstar’).
The voiceover says that for really big selling records up to 40 presses are used for the one release. Also it claimed 1 in 10 records are checked for quality. Packing by hand is shown. Fascinating history and although there are a number of clear indications this is EMI, the company is never credited.
