A1: Cedarwood Publ. BMI
A2 to B1: Paradox Music BMI
B2: Alstein Music BMI
Censored version with "motherfucker" replaced with "brothers and sisters" from the intro to A2.
Noted in runout as "RADiO VERSiON". Same as promo release MC5 - Kick Out The Jams. Although this version is on 1969-70 red large "E" label, the similarity to promo version would indicate a late 1969 release.

Edited 11 years ago[All info referring to the US pressings]First off, all of the originals have a gatefold sleeve. Secondly, there exists both censored and uncensored jackets AND censored and uncensored recordings, AND they occur in different combinations, here's my research on that.
There is the uncensored recording, with the intro to track 2 side 1 "Kick Out the Jams" where Vocalist Rob Tyner shouted "And right now... right now... right now it's time to... KICK OUT THE JAMS, M*THE#F*#KER!" before the opening riffs. There is also the censored recording where the swear is replaced with "brothers and sisters"[1]. The ONLY way to tell if the version is censored is to listen.
Upon release, retailers could choose to purchase the either the censored or uncensored version. Out of the uncensored versions, the first x number of copies also had the uncensored [2], Jack Sinclair liner notes with the same swear word, printed towards the end of the notes[3]. The notes are printed underneath the picture of the band and spread across both s; on the censored jackets, there is are no extended liner notes printed underneath the band[4].
Finally, a little about the labels; Elektra made the switch from their tan labels to the red labels from 1968 [5] and continuing the transition through 1969 [6]. So for Kick Out the Jams, that means there are censored and uncensored copies with BOTH tan and red labels[7].

Edited 12 years agoI have had this discussion with multiple long-time dealers and collectors and the conclusion is that there is absolutely no way to tell other than to play it.
(how to identify censored/non-censored versions of this MC5 pressing). -
