I was 14 in 1984 and living on the south coast of the UK, and our school organised an exchange trip to a town called Riom in the middle of .
I was an early music snob with an unshakeable love of the Jam, The Who, The Specials, Madness etc but this tune was played at one of the discos they threw for us. It seemed to cast a spell over everyone with it's haunting minor chords and strange lyrics, and we all bought a copy to take home, without doubt the anthem to that summer.
It was only years later when looking for online distractions that I discovered John Entwistle's involvement - and at the same time eagerly sought out the translated lyrics to finally understand the song's mystical message.
Slightly disappointing to find that the lyrics are a load of old nonsense, but the song still has a powerful ability to take me back to that perfect summer of coach seats, sunshine and stolen kisses with Sabine Rigaud. -
