Quite possibly, the best of Angels of Light, or, rather, this particular, haunted Folk Rock flavour of Michael Gira.
One could argue that the theme of this album is love, expressed in a melancholy sound palette, but that would be wrong. This album is a study of a sickness of a soul called love. Gira's gravitation towards the decadent in his music is widely known and provides an interesting, if slightly disturbing, perspective on human emotion. The pleasant and clever arrangements appear as simple as they are complex. A shade of lacking is always present, an element of the named decadence, either revealing itself within the dissonant cords or lyrics born of grief.
As with many great albums, this too is presented in a cyclical structure - the opening and closing tracks are long, expansive and share some audio elements. The 6th track, New City In The Future stands out as a mammoth 12-minute-long survey of mental landscape - barren, under a gleaming, uncaring sun, reaching an exhausting nuclear crescendo; basically soundtrack for Fallout 3. 7th track, My Suicide is reminiscent of Baudelaire's poetry - love is examined not as a feeling of pleasure, but of ultimate disgust and hate. Oh, how terrible the world would be, if people experienced love as intense hate! 9th track, Public Embarassment Blues is the true closure of the album. It's pleasant melody is like a white nib, dipped in poison, writing a breakup letter to love and the world itself.
In How I Loved You Gira has condensed the unbearable hurt of a sick heart, akin to Trent Reznor's studies of heartbreak. A definite masterpiece, but to be enjoyed in limited doses. 5/5
