Agalloch’s work was a big part of my life and this style of music about 10 years ago, but I have shelved it since. Before my re-listen to Pale Folklore, I can still to this day those opening notes of “Hallways of Enchanted Ebony” and I knew that this song is great.

After listening to this track again, I can see why I did as this is easily my favourite on the album. Agalloch is one of those bands whose music can paint pictures of frozen melancholy and desolate atmosphere. (Especially with their future work). “Hallways of Enchanting Ebony” is very beautifully dark with lots of cold charm, and so wintery.

However, the 3 part opener “She Painted Fire Across the Skyline” sounds thrown together with some epic parts, some bad, and some really corny parts that had me cringing. At this point I’ll say that Haughm’s scorched style of vocals doesn’t really appeal to me anymore. “Dead Winter Days”, “As Embers Dress the Sky” and “Melancholy Spirit” are okay with some nice guitar work and melodies.
