I too am a guitarist and yes I am a big zappa fan!! Yes I agree with all that this is the best guitar wizardry improv album of all time!! And its just a bunch of his culled solos at live shows from 77 78? I guess.. anyway .. Yes if you have never heard this set, it is very infectious if you are a musician//guitar player esp.. It will be very hard to stop listening to it! Prob the most unique and best guitarist of all time. Ha Eddie Van did not worship him for nothing.. still you cannot even compare a band like Van Halen to Zappa's wide facet of musical creativity and talent in his endless works from do-wop, funk, soul, blues, jazz, classical, rock, country western.. shall I keep going .. musicals.. .. talk about catchy tunes and riffs... any way you can stuff it zappa stuffed it!

Showcases Frank Zappa's staggering musical aptitude & distinctive sound & why he's one of the best (although highly underrated & underappreciated) guitarists of all time.
Beautiful improvisations from Mars. -
I inherited this from my dad. I grew up listening to Zappa, at least the stuff our parents knew was ok for us to hear as kids. It's true, nobody sounds like Zappa on guitar, he has his own signature and this is a great album, even if you don't care for his songwriting or lyrical choices you have to at least appreciate this. I think it's impossible for anyone to like everything that Zappa did but everyone regardless should give this at least one listen. It's been cool coming around this album again 40 years later. Classic

Frank zappa gives us compositions played on the guitar. the sound of the 3 vinyls is very good. essential if you like f zappa. despite its 79 years edition these albums sound great.

If I could give more than 5 Stars for this set I would. This is Frank at his very best and as suggested on the box this should prove just how incredibly talented he is as a guitar player. I can’t believe when people go on about this or that guitar player being the best then don’t even put Frank in a top ten. He is the top ten. Absolutely stunning.

Edited 5 years agoZappa is my favorite guitarist. He doesn't sound like anyone else. His guitar is immediately recognizable making Zappa original. Being original in these times is next to impossible and frequently either regarded callously or shunned completely. This is why I value Zappa, especially his guitar playing, particularly the solos. A boxset of Zappa solos in audiophile quality.....well.....holy f*cking sh*t. 1981 started to look up when this was made. N

Zappa's mountain of recordings range from unlistenable to untouchable - this one definitely falls on the latter end. There is something about the backing instrumentation on these solos that give them incredible depth. Gets me right in the feels you know? FZ absolutely shreds with original style, demonstrating what true mastery looks like on a guitar. I really can't see how a musician or audiophile can listen to this album and not put FZ in the same league as hendrix, page and the other typical top names you see on those stupid lists of guitar legends.
-
just in case this is not already universally known but the recording
quality and sound quality of this set rivals any i've ever heard.
of course the music is amazing as others have reviewed but Zappa
records are always incredibly well recorded, mastered and pressed.
i don't think enough credit is given to his relentless pursuit of quality.
especially since most of his records contain some live and studio
recordings seamlessly woven together to make new material,
i'm not sure but i don't know too many others who have taken that
very difficult approach to recording. -
-
Probably the single greatest collection of electric guitar solos in the entire Universe. Truly staggering.
