This rough cover version is definitely an original pressing. I've had mine since late the late 80s. The cover is rough matte texture including the photos. There is no gloss overlay on it. The inner is gold and you cant get fingerprint marks off. This pressing sounds fantastic! Listening now the drum sounds are very punchy and similar to Nirvana.

If you have the sleeve for this (but not the record) and you'd like to sell it, send me a message. Thanks.

Un buen prensado con un excelente sonido. Creo que permite apreciar muy bien la característica producción de Steve Albini. Como único detalle, creo que ninguna portada blanca debiese ser lanzada en cartón rugoso, nunca jamás.

This copy is way better than Mofi. In my opinion the best sounding pressing of all. Side by side this one kills it and all other versions

Any Surfer Rosa experts out there that can help ID my copy, specifically th he cover difference between the "Rough" cover Pixies - Surfer Rosa? The version I have has a cream color matte border, but I wouldn't call it rough. The center photograph seems to have more of a sheen than the border. Labels match rough cover edition more closely than smooth.

Edited 4 years agoFrom the pictures here, the sleeve of this version seem to be uncoated cardboard. The pictures on front and back; is there a layer of lacquer on top of both

I'm not convinced this 'rough cover' is an original 1988 pressing. One or two other people have posted here to say that they bought it on day of release and their copy has a glossy sleeve and it's the same with me. The 2004 reissue, on the other hand, DEFINITELY does have a rough cover - https://discogs.cinepelis.org/Pixies-Surfer-Rosa/release/2109418
You can tell the two apart by the inner sleeve. the 1988 issue uses gold metallic ink for the inner. The inner in the 2004 issue is a non-metallic yellow/brown colour.
(Btw, there's a similar difference between original copies of Bossanova and the 2004 reissue. Originals use silver metallic ink on the front cover. reissues use a non-metallic grey.) -
Original copies had a small silver "modesty" hype sticker placed over "Rosa's" bare torso. It said "pixies surfer Rosa" on it.
I have an old rough trade pressing that has a white insert, printed with the same pictures and info as the gold sleeve most editions have. Haven't seen this variation listed. -
