Edited 2 months agoThis one is ( very very likely) crafted using the original masters. The whole sound structure is on par with initial vinyl STERLING DMM OG version.
Excellent separation, analogue vibe and purity of high frequency - all these features are here but NOT on the
subsequent releases with RE prefix and small matrix font. Moreover those sound excessively loud and a bit harsh.
To my ears this exact pressing ( with "classic" big SRC matrix font, without RE prefix and IFPI) is the only competitor to 1986 vinyl release.

I have a copy of the '95 remaster in my collection from growing up. Recently snagged a copy of this version at a record fair when I saw it was the original mastering (if you're on the hunt, look for copies that credit Electra/Asylum as opposed to E/M Ventures on the back cover and the CD itself)
Night and day difference from the '95 master, which I always thought sounded decent enough, but now sounds brick walled in comparison. This is so much better and more dynamic.
Ultimately, though, I end up liking the sound on the 2017 Chris Bellman vinyl cut a touch better - it sacrifices a tiny bit in the dynamics, but to my ear has more kick in the low end (specifically, the bass drum comes through more powerful on my vinyl copy)
But, if you're looking for a CD copy, this one is fantastic and seems to go for less than some of the other original mastering versions. Which I don't understand for CDs, because they should be identical. -

Edited one year agoThese are excellent. A time when CDs sounded better than vinyl. Get a copy if you can, it should just say "SRC" not "RE", which indicates the later compressed remaster. These original CDs are so dynamic you can hear every instrument clearly, exactly as it was recorded to the analog tape.

when you got the cheat code for the double-barrel shotgun in DOOM and turned the music level all the way up?

My dad bought this record when it came out as his first CD.. I'd be willing to buy this, with longbox, for the right price..

Metallica's peak, without doubt. They made thrash metal sophisticated with this album. It's so intricate. I even compare this to classical, not sure why. It moved them on from the punky thrash metal of the first two albums, which I also love. Next album "Justice" has "One" on it so deserves respect for that alone. Then the black album and oh dear...

This is probably one of Metallica's best albums. Hard, fast and generally angry. when I first got this album back in 86 , it blew me away. Tracks like Battery, Thing That should Not be, Disposable Heroes and Damage Inc, Rock. And who could go past Orion with Burtons kick ass bass work. Great album. 5/5
