This is my go-to version of Lodger. I’ve got the first UK pressing, this, the RCA CD, the Ryko CD, and the 2017 release (plus the Visconti remix).
The UK pressing is ok. From what I’ve read,if anyone has issues with Lodger it’s usually around the mix. The original vinyl sounds a bit mushy, but it’s certainly not unlistenable! Put it this way, I’ve heard a lot worse.
This Japanese pressing is pretty much the same as the UK release but with a marginally cleaner sound. It sounds a tad brighter to my ears, although not brighter in a detrimental way. I’m more than happy with it. Plus, it looks so nice with the OBI strip, and the tough card sleeve.
The best version overall is the RCA CD. I’m a big fan of that one. It sounds chunky and almost 3D.
I don’t see me playing the 2017s again, although I don’t dislike the remix.
Anyway, great album. Took me the best part of 40 years to ‘get it’. Back then it felt like a random collection of songs that Bowie had just thrown together. How wrong I was. This is Bowie doing ‘New Wave ‘ and doing it really well. Ten songs that have been beaten about with Bowie & Eno’s pretension stick yet they come out the other end sounding slightly bonkers, edgy, twisted and funny, as well as catchy and classy. Repetition is sinister and wired. Fantastic Voyage - gentle and paranoid. Red Sails, a hybrid that steals from the Orient via Neu! : African Night Flight - it has the cricket menace, so automatically that’s a great track, 2 fantastic singles : Boys Keep Swinging with its creepy video, and insane guitar solo; and DJ, which twists and scurries around the grooves, half Thin White Duke, half David Byrne.
What a time to be alive ! I am what I play.
