Edited 8 years agoTangerine Dream seemed to do a fair bit of casting about between 1977 and 1980, a shake-up initiated by Peter Baumann's departure, a year or two of Froese / Franke augmented by various session musicians, and then the arrival and settling into a new trio with Johannes Schmoelling. "Exit" seems to perfectly capture not only this transition, but also what feels like an abrupt shift toward digital synthesis and an FM sound palette. After the awkward "Cyclone" and the art-rock infused "Force Majeure", I see "Exit" as showing the leading edge of Schmoelling's influence, which culminated in the fantastic "Poland". I don't require this album to maintain continuity with the earlier 'Virgin Years' analog work, as that was already pretty much broken with as of "Cyclone"; and I love the cold tech noir eeriness of "Exit", like a ghost movie set in the alleys and rain of "Bladerunner". As a bridge between the '70s and '80s TD phases, it's perfect.
