with this being björk's attempt at ing a movie to an album and creating a soundtrack i would like to say that it is probably the best i have ever heard. its fluidity shocked me since it contains peculiar story lines but it makes perfect sense with that of the film. she continually branches out into different formats without fail.

Edited 17 years agoIf there is a Bjork album to ire above the rest, then 'Selmasongs' is definitely the one to choose - personally (and generally), I am not a big fan of musicals for all of their bittersweetness, but 'Selmasongs' helped changing my own perspective enormously regarding such issue. For this is one of the truest musicals made ever!
Generally, if you buy the album and listen to it solely, you might find its contents a bit confusing, unaware of the beauty of the very film, Bjork so ionately embraced by her erratic acting (and of course, singing). On the other hand it can play its tiny role as a sole album, where the story of a poor woman struggling between dreams and reality is viewed from somewhat different corner (but regarding the film, not complete one) - in that case we're left to our own devices trying desperately to decipher what '109 Steps' or 'Cvalda' actually stand for. But once we have seen it all, 'Selmasongs' fulfills its beautiful sonic extension, constantly ing imaginary worlds 'Selma' in particular and then the rest of her film mates (including Catherine Deneuve and Joel Grey) provide in all of their eccentricity.
I wonder what would Julie Andrews think of this, rather avant-garde revision of her cult-classic from the sixties - a perfect balance between classical and the post-modern, where orchestration finds no objection confronting all sorts of electronic manipulation during the creative process; bleeps and field music snippets capturing footsteps, steel klangs, machines and vinyl noise. A masterpiece - Bjork deservedly won her award for contributing in this, film they say, but which can be also viewed as a stunningly executed two-hour music video. With a breathtakingly sad ending indeed.
