Edited 8 days agoEnter Bill Dixon. Partially recorded just days after Cecil Taylor's Conquistador on which he positively shines, in comes Dixon with an album that is called a masterpiece in the liner notes of the Taylor album (Conquistador was held back for release until March '68). And a masterpiece it is. Dark, brooding, but also full of carefully placed notes and silences. Those who like their free jazz more controlled and organised with a dark edge to it, should certainly pick this (hard to find) gem up!
(Reissued on CD by ezz-thetics in 2023 with catalogue number 1157 coupled with 2 tracks from a release by the Archie Shepp - Bill Dixon Quartet (originally released on Savoy with 2 more tracks) and 2 tracks from a release by the Bill Dixon 7-Tette (originally also released on Savoy with 3 more tracks), making it perhaps a less desirable release for purists)
