Eat Static – Epsylon

The first Eat Static cd I got. Eat Static were in my opinion thee best example of Goa trance (Robert Leiner would be for psychedelic techno). This cd brings back allot of memories of the spring of 1996 for me. Allot of clubs and desert parties in California. Except for the drum n bass Dionysiac, as far as ideas and combinations this cd isn't as wide arranged as Implant, Abduction or Science of the Gods but for my tastes its the most linear and straight forward techno. Still there are hints of house music in Peow! For example. No genre is really safe from exploring in an Eat Static song. Probably seeing as it's combos of a couple of 12" singles could be the reason I feel its not the most expressive.. Similar to Decadance (which has a few very underrated tracks btw) it still feels like an a full length album. Favorites on here include Gulf Breeze, Lost in Time and Peow! You can't really go wrong buying anything from Eat Static from 1992 to 1998 they were just the cream of the crop in psychedelia. This era for me culminated seeing them live in 1997 absolutely tearing the rough off in of Science of Gods. Even when their music was hitting cheesy parts their personality, creativeness and talent still won me over. Thats how good Eat Static are. The masters of the genre

Eat Static have been among my favorite electronic acts for some time. This collection brings together the Epsylon ep and the lost in time EP, and forms a perfect bridge between their first two albums and Science of the Gods. I have Eat Static in the same hallowed company as the Orb on my playlists, and rightfully so. Although they have been more rooted in techno and psy, they simply have too many elements going on in their music to be pigeonholed into an easy "one size fits all" category. In many respects, this is just a general endorsement of the band overall, as all the records I wanted to review were reviewed well enough already I think, but clearly Epsylon and Dionysic are the two standouts here, the former being a good representation of how commanding they can be in straight ahead techno, and the latter being one of their earliest forays into drum and bass, a style that would pop up on almost every subsequent release in some form or another, and a style that they command amazingly well, on par with pretty much anything Metalheadz has released, and that’s no small feat!

This album and Science of the Gods were also the two records that received a big mainstream push, falling as they do in the midst of the mainstreams' short lived love affair with "electronica." However, that said, Eat Statics entire discography is just as worthy, and they are a rare act whose quality has never really waned, even if their popularity (along with many other acts at the time that were touted as the next big thing, only to be dropped by the mainstream as soon as the next easy trend came along) waned.
