Great sounding pressing! I never heard this album sound so clear! Also love the whole package: the box, the coloured vinyl etc. Everything is beautiful.

“Couldn’t I Just Tell You” - Using this track, I compared this Record Store Day Black Friday Chris Bellman 45rpm remaster with my copy of the original 1972 Lee Hulko at STERLING cut. To my surprise and disappointment, I prefer my 50 year old, garage sale $1 copy. Yes, “twntyfive2life” is spot on when he/she says the RSD has more instrument separation. On CIJTY all the upper mids, including Todd’s screeching vocals, are crystal clear with no distortion, unlike on the Lee Hulko version, where Todd, the hard plucked acoustic guitar and crashing cymbals are cut hot, sound shrill, teetering on harshness. If you like MOFI mastering - clear and polite highs, neutered of any sibilance so as to provide palatableness for the wholesome, middle class suburban wife demographic - then this pricey reissue is for you. I, however, prefer some bite in the upper mids for this track, which the Hulko provides, if, perhaps, excessively. What can I say, I dig GBV recordings and the whole ‘90s shitty low-fi recorded, indie power punk aesthetic.
My main disappointment is that the Bellman version dampens the lows, deflating the track’s muscularity. The Hulko mastering, otoh, kicks ass in a similar way that the Ludwig Led Zep II does. It’s the relentless bass swelling from underneath, even at the expense of smearing the upper mids, that makes this track a power pop headbanger; it’s got balls. If the rest of this reissue matches up with the characteristics of this one track, then I can say the Bellman will appeal to chin stroking, wine sipping yuppie audiophiles, the Hulko to middle-aged throwbacks to cranking the 1978 ghetto blaster, street thugs, and reckless outsiders. -
Has anyone notice that Black Maria starts with very little high frequency information, then slowly gets brighter as track progresses? It's the only tune on the whole 4LP package that's starkly disappointing compared to the original gatefold...

Edited 2 years agoI STRONGLY recommend that if you are going to buy a copy of this you buy an opened copy that is confirmed to have all eight sides pressed correctly and not Side 8 pressed twice and missing a Side 6. I've gone through 3 copies of this already and they've all had the same issue.
-
This pressing sounds pretty incredible to me; I'll probably never listen to my '72 Bearsville pressing again. My discs are all flat and decently clean out of the box. I would've preferred 33 vs 45 rpm for less flipping but it is what it is.
-
Does this contain the original gatefold photo of Todd in his apartment, and the 4-side insert that came with the record originally?
-
It's really pathetic that overstock of this RSD title which retails at $70-$80 is now being flogged a couple of days later by stores at flipper prices.
-
Anyone who has this: Does it say AAA anywhere on the covers or vinyl? I am trying to find out if this release is All Analogue with no digital in the mastering chain. If anyone has any information please let us all know. Thanks.
-
The 45RPM edition gave me all the extra punch and definition I expected and hoped it would. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves this album and appreciates the extra something you get from 45RPM records. Here's hoping Rhino gives more classic albums the 45RPM treatment!
