Edited 2 years agoThere are a total of seven different remixes here, but none of these releases include all of them. Would be great to have a vinyl reissue, maybe a 2xLP, that has all of them! I find each of them better than the original album version. The 12/4cadetmx is especially good. This is some great Halloween music!

I don't recall the three 10"s being sold already in the box....I was sold the first one in the box and the other two separately all at £1.99 each. (Fopp, Byres Road, Glasgow). I never saw the first 10" without the box at the time, only subsequently.

BCDTMX was the first track by AE that I ever heard....I saw the video for it on an electronic music show here in Canada back in 1997. My first thought was basically "what the hell is this??" After awhile, it grew on me and I had to find it, also discovering "Incunabula" in the process. After that, there was no looking back. I was hooked on Autechre for good! Since then, I've picked up all the albums and seen them live 5 times... All because I happened to hear this track way back in '97 :)

How is it possible that I may be the only person on earth that thinks the SeeFeel remix is beyond amazing?!

Beaumont mix is the real work here. Yes the others sound just like extended or techno version of the original. Beaumont's mix of Basscadet might be the most recognizable track in the Autechre catalog. Everyone into idm knows this remix and likes it. It's up there with the most memorable Aphex Twin ever did. But then I'm a sucker for that synth found in this remix. Remixing Autechre is a daunting task I'm sure. You can see the bland attempts here for example. Very dated and forgettable. Except Beaumont saving grace basic synth addition. That is till the dub version. Sublime. 2 good 3 weak.

I initially shared the opinion that this was a rather boring release, or at least a somewhat unspectacular one. It's only after a good couple of listens that I find that this, although not as popular and obviously different in style, is just as strong of an EP as Ae-essentials like Envane or Cichlisuite. Hence I have to disagree with everyone claiming it wouldn't be worth its while.
Most of the tracks are simpler in nature than what we are used to from more recent albums, they are all remixes of the same track, yet some barely sound like the original. The album opener is a straight forward and bass heavy version of Basscadet which is quite intense while not very speaker-friendly. Where the roots of this track may be undeniable, the standout track on the EP for me, Tazmx, rather sounds like something that could belong on Amber, yet it is somewhat different than any other Ae-track I've heard, even some hip hop elements shine through. A very unique piece that alone would make the EP worth buying.
I suggest to include this EP in your Autechre collection. -
Edited 19 years agoProbably Autechre's most boring release. This is simply because this EP contains only remixes of Basscadet from the Incunabula album. While they are good remixes, it just feels lacking because the other 9 Autechre EPs contain all new music. Oh well... For what it is though, it does its job well. My favorite remix is probably track 2, Beaumonthannanttwomx (say that 5 times fast!), which sounds the most unique of the bunch in my opinion. The other 4 remixes are crunchy-techno versions of the original. If you're a big fan of their Incunabula album, then this is a nice little companion EP you may want to get for yourself.
