Not gonna pile on about how sublime the set is. Just wish the entire fricking catalogue had been treated to the same standard, or as well as the Ziggy 2012 LP / DVD-A reissue, or the top notch DVD-A remasters of Young Americans, David Live and Stage - instead of the GOD-AWFUL remastered box sets that started back in 2015, or the atrociously jacked up 1999 remasters. For all the hate about the 1990/1991 Rykos, they were much better than both.
Anyway. This set is mind-blowing, and any fan that cares about sound quality should get it. -
I just got this used. It is my FAVORITE Bowie album and i bought it for the 5.1 surround an DTS surround mixes. The DTS doesn't work on ANY of my players and the 5.1 Dolby surround mix just sounds like a very good stereo mix which is already featured on the same disc. Anyone else have this issue?
-
Edited 4 years agoWhen I got this box set years ago I noticed amongst the ephemera was – what I thought was – a reproduction of Bowie's autograph, written on a ment for a Bowie book. I just learned the autograph is in fact real. How many of you have this? It's bizarre I see no mention of it here. I confirmed it's real via a website devoted to Bowie autographs: https://davidbowieautograph.com
-
Does "Life on Mars?" and "Five Years" on Nassau Coliseum Disc 5 have lower quality than the rest of the live tracks (due to caption issues or like) or is just my copy? :(
-
I'll it I bought this set primarily to get Station to Station in a high-resolution digital format (DVD-Audio). Everything else? Of historical interest (the live recordings)...not entirely essential, but a nice touch (the latest analogue remaster on Red Book CD, so I can rip it to .MP3 for my iPod)...or, downright ridiculous (the 1985 RCA version of the CD...why? or, replicas of "fan club" ephemera?)
As for the 96/24 audio on the DVD. Can't add much to what LostTurntable already wrote: this is how to do the job right.
I was blown away. It was worth it.
As for the "New Harry Maslin mix": perhaps it would be interesting to hear on a multichannel system (my hardware is strictly stereo, so I wouldn't know). In 48K/24bit stereo, which is my only option? I don't like it (and don't intend to hear it more than once). More like a remix than a remaster, which was the idea I would hope. Some audio elements I'd consider essential have been entirely effaced. In return, you get an idiosyncratic reworking of Station to Station, extremely punchy and bright: all muscle and no finesse. Impressive, but not in a good way.
As others have noted, the packaging and presentation are jaw-dropping: absolutely no stone left unturned. Excessive? Oh yes. But those of us who've decided to own this edition: we're entitled to a bit of pampering, are we not? (Considering the price.) I'd hoped for a bit of nostalgia for the UK import LP--with its striking graphic design--which I'd bought in my college years. I got that indeed, and a lot more. -
Like with AloneWithStrangers, Station To Station is my favorite David Bowie album, and I was quite surprised when earlier this year I heard that it was going to be given the Deluxe treatment. I was, however, a bit apprehensive - I've not been too impressed with quite a few "Deluxe / Anniversary / Special / Collectors etc Editions" of late - so it wasn't I until came across pictures and details of the box set and it's contents on Bowie's website a month later that I (after picking my jaw up off the floor) hit the "Preorder" button without hesitation.
I received the box set yesterday morning and have been pouring and obsessing over it's contents for over 24 hours. Long story short(er), I couldn't be happier with it. I'm an audio engineer and musician; LostTurntable hit the nail right on the head - If you're an audio technician, engineer, musician, etc, you NEED to listen to this. If you're not any of those but are a fan of Bowie's work and this album in particular, you will not be disappointed, to say the least. I would have been just as pleased if the box contained only the LPs, CDs and DVD - the extras are VERY nice indeed - but it's all about the sound; it truly is sublime, and its not the side effects of the cocaine. Umm... Not that I'd know what that would be like cos... er...... -ahem!- moving along...*
I have a copy of the original 1976 RCA Victor UK LP (which is as old as I am), the 1991 Rykodisc reissue CD, the 1999 Virgin remastered CD and the Japanese 2009 SHM-CD / Mini LP CD (which uses the 1999 remaster but to me sounds noticeably more compressed). The 1976 LP was the one I always found to be the best sounding of the lot, however these new 2010 remasters have taken its place. The CD and LP are both spectacular sounding, but it's the DVD's Stereo and 5.1 versions that really shine. The 1985 RCA remaster is great too, and I know quite a few folks who prefer it over the later remasters. As for the Nassau Coliseum material, well I haven't listened to it yet, but will soon, and will update this review accordingly.
Now all I have to do is wait for Low to get "Deluxed". And 'Heroes'.
And Scary Monsters. :)
[* seriously though, I really don't] -
The audio quality on these CDs/DVD/LPs is better than anything else I have ever heard. All sound technicians and studio engineers should be forced to buy this as a freakin' manual of how to master an album. Absolutely flawless.
-
Where do you start with this? It is my favourite Bowie album and I guess I was expecting just a double disc edition to be released. When this came up for pre-order on Amazon a couple of months ago, I must it that I got a little excited!
I already had the original vinyl (Italian release if you're interested) RCA CD pressing and at least one of the EMI remasters from the early 1990s but each of these recordings sures all of those versions. The DVD mixes are, simply, stupendous.
The extras in the box are certainly very nice but you know that you'll only look at them a few times. The real joy are the discs.
Now let's hope that 'Heroes', Low, Lodger & Scary Monsters get the same - or similar - treatment. And then obviously completely ruin my bank .
