Never was a big Cars fan, but this MoFi remaster of this album was recommended to me by a trusted source.
Man, was he right. How did I miss this album my whole 47 years? We've all heard most of the songs. Almost every one was a Top 20 hit.
This vinyl and this remaster are just extraordinary. Sonic perfection. It shows how good vinyl can be when done with care and precision.
This one is a legend. Now I have to pick up the next MoFi in the Cars' catalog.
Extraordinary. Detail, dynamics, soundstage, everything is excellent. -
Learn from my venture down the rabbit hole.
tl;dr Just buy this version, it’s great!
I had a first Canadian pressing that had some pretty unbearable sibilance during All Mixed Up. Found another copy and it had the same thing. Decided to get the newer Rhino pressing and returned it due to the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh on side one and a warp. Sounded solid though. Tried a replacement and the whoosh was still there but the warp was worse. Found an early American pressing that sounded a little bright to me. I grew up with my Mom playing this record a lot, so I will it I am also looking to have that nostalgic bump with the pressing. This is never a cheap or easy path to venture. In any case, finally grabbed the MFSL pressing and am very happy with it. Each pressing had its own qualities - of which some are better than this one - but as far as finding an affordable, well rounded pressing of this record in M/ NM- condition, I feel this is the one. -

Just bought this sealed from a local record store mainly to see how it compares to the 2023 Rhino mastered and cut by Kevin Gray. After listening to the first side of each album, this MFSL sounds muted and dull compared to the Rhino. The treble and low-end sound much better on the Rhino. Not surprising, the Rhino plays with much better dynamics and sounds crisp and full of life compared to the MFSL. This isn’t bad, but the Rhino smokes it.

This LP sounds fantastic. I’m not the world’s biggest Mobile Fidelity smoke blower, however I can’t deny that they’ve done some of the best cuts ever put to wax. Their work on the Cars catalogue reminds me of why people still buy MoFi releases to this day.
Not all of them are this good, but man, this one rips. Same for the other 2 Cars records they cut during the same period. IMO these were cut during peak MoFi days. -
Edited one year agoi have an o.p .... this mfsl cut is better in some areas and not in others. i resold this because at that price level its generally the same .

Just got this. Agree 100% about the vocals. That to me is the biggest difference in the mix between the OG and this. The vocals are much lower in the mix than the OG for sure. I have an OG SP red label press and the vocals are much higher in the mix, it’s very noticeable when you go back and forth between the pressings. Bass sounds better but Drums are different too but not in a good way. The best part about this press is the soundstage is wider for sure. Other than that I like the OG sound better.

My first MoFi reissue and wow. I was skeptical, especially after the controversary surrounding the digital step. But this just sounds so good.

well.... let's see how Kevin Grey does on the new "high fidelity" Rhino series! would be very interested to hear a comparison.
