The Damned's pop/psych/garage/goth era is very underrated, and these singles and demos swirling around 'Strawberries' and the 'Friday the 13th' EP are great evidence of that. "Lovely Money", "Dozen Girls" (in a very different mix from the one on 'Strawberries'), "Disguise" (which reminds me of The End....the psych band Bill Wyman produced, not that goofy Doors song), and the very, very funny "Some Girls Are Ugly" are all perfect pop songs. "Nice Cup of Tea" sounds like it was co-written by Syd Barrett and Ray Davies, and if that doesn't sound divine to you, I'm afraid we can never be mates. "Take Me Away" is a glam stomp worthy of Slade. "Torture Me" is a short and bitter vegetarian statement of purpose from the Cap'n. Right on. And, frankly, these raw demo versions of "Disco Man" and "Billy Bad Breaks" blow away the ones on 'Friday the 13th'...all they're missing is Dave's vocals.
