This vinyl is powerful. Low end booms. Mids are thick, yet clear. Highs are are crisp. This thing sounds great! And a bonus... my vinyl is translucent.

IMHO. This is the best sound of this album amongst the initial pressings. Comparing to 1st Japanese and 1UK - this one sounds better, punchier, clearer, dynamically wider and brighter.
Get yourself a copy while you can. There are not so many of these left, especially in a good condition.
Amazing pressing of the amazing album of the best Heavy Metal Band of all times. -
Edited 7 months agoWhen compared against UK pressing I liked this US pressing much more. There is a little bit more punch and dynamics on this US pressing. I also noticed that the colors on the album cover were a bit more colorful on this US pressing.

Edited 3 years agoAs "Number of the Beast" turns 40 years old this year, I thought I'd pull out my '82 Harvest pressing and listen critically. I purchased this copy in '82 with my allowance $. I vividly going straight home and listening to it over and over for the next week. Then, when Maiden came to town, I got to see them on this tour.
Coming off "Killers", this was the first album with Bruce Dickinson, and his contributions to the band are noteworthy. The songs are a step up and the playing is excellent here. Maiden is shifting from the proto punk sound of the first two records over to a more prog metal, concept-based band. Riffs are complex but elegant, and the trademark heavy gallop is fully exploited by this point.
Mixwise, they still have some maturing to do. I'm detecting a rumble in the upper low frequencies (250hz), that just causes an unsatisfying resonance. Increasing the room volume does not help. This leads to confusion and ear fatigue. I can notch it out with EQ, but compared to my OG Maiden vinyl before this and after this, this issue only seems to be present on NOB.
Back to the music, highlights here include "Number of the Beast", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Run to the Hills". Maestros Smith and Murray operate together like clockwork. Vocals are mixed dead center and never move from that position. At times they get swallowed by other goings on.
I always thought this was one of my 2 favorite maiden records, but it's about 4 or 5 as I revisit with more mature ears.
Of course you need this in your collection. 3.5 stars. Recommended
