Can definitely confirm this pressing is underwhelming, very uncharacteristic of a German press.
The sonic qualities are all over the place. At times there are some features that come through warm and present, while most of the recording feels flat.
Most notably, the vocals are very pushed back and blanketed, and the percussion suffers the worst. The cymbals have so much flutter on them that it sounds like it was sourced from a damaged tape.
The percussion is the biggest issue here, I can still enjoy and forgive the other deficiencies, but the symbals disrupt the expirence far too much.
Lovely album, disappointing pressing. -
Edited 6 years agoThis, much like Wishbone Ashes first album on MCA Records has quite a lackluster sound.
Its very low end murky and quiet for the most part, making worn copies very hard to play.
Not very dynamic or present either and just leaves me dumbfounded at why no one else mentions this.
There are some nice harmonics and detail in the soundstage compared to the first album though and it shows how this was recorded better. Too bad the mastering engineer was not.
I have no idea if any other release betters the slacking aspects or not but it would be great to hear someones input on it. So far Im in the belief that most late 60s to early 70s MCA releases are bad sounding even as first pressings, with some exceptions like Camel. Maybe US counterparts are better?
